The Golden LEAF Rural Internship Initiative is seeking potential site hosts for summer 2027!

Through the initiative, Golden LEAF Scholars gain hands-on professional experience in rural North Carolina communities, while participating businesses and organizations benefit from their skills, energy, and ideas.

✅ Interns work up to 400 hours over 8–12 weeks.
✅ Golden LEAF provides funding for intern wages.
✅ Internships provide meaningful career-related experience.

🌱 Putting North Carolina farmers at the center of agricultural innovation!

The NC Ag Leads Farmer Innovation Bridge has officially launched! Supported by a $2.15 million award from the Golden LEAF Foundation, this new initiative will connect challenges identified by North Carolina farmers with innovators developing technologies, tools, and practical solutions to address their needs.

Led by the North Carolina Chamber Foundation, with support from Golden LEAF and the Carolina To***co Trust Fund Commission. The Farmer Innovation Bridge will build on existing agricultural resources and partnerships to help move promising solutions from ideas to real-world applications on North Carolina farms.

The goal? Start with farmers, connect the right resources, and turn innovation into action.

Golden LEAF is proud to support this collaborative effort to strengthen North Carolina agriculture

Golden LEAF announces $9 million in funding to support economic opportunity across rural North Carolina! 🌱

At its October meeting, the Golden LEAF Board of Directors awarded funding to support:

🔹 Public water infrastructure for Caterpillar’s $1 billion expansion in Lee County
🔹 A new agricultural center to support farmers and agribusinesses in Mitchell County
🔹 Water infrastructure supporting 300 new manufacturing jobs in Graham County
🔹 Expanded medical and healthcare workforce training at East Carolina University
🔹 775 new and renewal Golden LEAF Scholarships for rural students
🔹 Flood mitigation efforts in Spring Lake

The Board also toured the new Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine in Fayetteville and welcomed Joe Sam Queen of Waynesville as its newest member.

🌟 Alumni Spotlight: Meet Bekah Mulligan! 🌟

From Golden LEAF Scholar to school principal, Bekah Mulligan has built her career around supporting students in rural North Carolina.

A Cherokee County native and 2011 Golden LEAF Scholar, Bekah graduated from Western Carolina University and went on to serve as a teacher, assistant principal, and now principal of Fairview Elementary School in Sylva. Her leadership was recently recognized when she was named the National Association of Elementary School Principals 2026 Outstanding Assistant Principal for North Carolina by the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principal’s Association.

Along the way, experiences through the Golden LEAF internship program helped Bekah explore different ways to serve students and her community.

The future of North Carolina agriculture depends on more than technology and innovation. It depends on people and on creating clear pathways for the next generation to build the skills agriculture needs.

In a new perspective, Golden LEAF President, Chief Executive Officer Scott T. Hamilton highlights how Career & Technical Education at Greene County Schools, Alamance Community College, and University of Mount Olive are helping students move from early exposure to hands-on training, credentials, advanced education, and ultimately careers in agriculture.

North Carolina already has many of the pieces in place. The opportunity now is to connect them even more intentionally and keep employers at the table along the way.
