OurJourney receives letters every week from people who are incarcerated. It's not very often, however, the letter comes from a military prison.

Yet that was the case over a year ago, when a gentleman at Fort Leavenworth first reached out to us for assistance. He's now approaching his release date, and recently wrote us again to thank us for helping him connect with housing options and asking for one of our Reentry Resource Guides, which we gladly sent him. That letter is below, with his name redacted.

While OurJourney focuses most of its efforts on men and women returning from our state correctional facilities, we're always willing to help anyone returning to a North Carolina community.

And we're excited that even someone incarcerated in Kansas has heard about us and reached out!

We're in Oxon Hill, Maryland, just outside of D.C., for the annual AWS Imagine conference.

Nonprofits from across every sector are represented here, over 1,400 people total, including others besides OurJourney that are working to support people on their reentry journeys.

People such as Kenyatta Leal of Next Chapter, a thriving reentry nonprofit in Oakland, CA. OurJourney and Next Chapter are exploring ways to collaborate on ViRSE, our innovative digital platform to help people prepare for reentry while they're incarcerated and then support them upon release.

We were in beautiful Miami on Monday for a Reentry Simulation at Florida International University in partnership with Exchange for Change!

Students, faculty, E4C board members, and other members of the community learned firsthand about the challenges awaiting men and women returning after incarceration. Our Executive Director facilitated, and our good friend Dr. Alberto De Simoni of NC State University made the trip as well.

"Kathie and her team are doing such an amazing job expanding educational opportunities for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated folks across Florida," said Brian. "This was my first trip to Miami, and the E4C team made it so memorable!"

Has your organization or company ever considered hosting a Reentry Simulation? If so, let us know! You can learn more by visiting https://www.ourjourney2gether.com/reentry-simulations

We recently spent time at Duke University with our dear friend Dr. Craig Waleed of Disability Rights North Carolina.

In partnership with the Duke Justice Project, Dr. Waleed brought his mobile Solitary Confinement Cell to campus to raise awareness about the mental health issues associated with keeping people locked in a box for 23 hours a day (or more), days on end.

We agree with Dr. Waleed that North Carolina should eliminate the use of solitary confinement under any name and under any circumstances. It is expensive, it has a negative impact on correctional officers, it doesn't work as punishment, and it returns people back to our communities worse than when they went to prison.

Why did we launch OurJourney?

We're here right now in Apex for the annual Prayer Breakfast fundraiser for Pardoned by Christ Ministry, a transition program for men in Raleigh led by Director Mike Shank. With four houses and six apartments, PBC can serve up to 31 men.

"Mike is one of the most genuine and gracious men I've ever met," says our Executive Director. "He's a perfect example of someone who once served time but is now serving the Lord and making a difference."

We're grateful to Mike and the entire PBC team for inviting us to today's celebration. Over 300 people are here enjoying a pancake breakfast, wonderful music and a lot of great fellowship.

Look for more photos from Apex soon!

Road Trip! Day Three! Back to where it all began!

Our Executive Director traveled across North Carolina to three prisons in three days, starting Monday with a visit to Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton and Tuesday at Lumberton Correctional Institution.

Yesterday Brian had the honor of returning to Nash Correctional Institution, where he served over 16 years of his sentence and where he met the friends who helped him launch OurJourney in 2022, one year after his release.

Case Manager Alpha Herring invited Brian to speak to a group of men who are enrolled in R-STEP (Reentry Strategic Transition Engagement Plan), a two-year program designed to prepare incarcerated individuals for return to society. It involves tailored plans focusing on cognitive-based interventions, obtaining identification, and securing housing and employment. NCI is one of the latest prisons in the state to offer this exciting program.

"Returning to Nash is always special," said Brian. "I have so many memories there, and every step I take across that campus again now floods my mind and heart with memories. Thank you, Mr. Herring, for giving me this opportunity to speak with my brothers, and special thanks to Warden Lee."

Road Trip! Day Two! Beep, beep!

Our Executive Director is traveling across North Carolina to three prisons in three days, starting Monday with a visit to Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton.

Yesterday Brian had the honor to visit with several dozen men at Lumberton Correctional Institution in Lumberton, NC, thanks to a gracious invitation from Tyleisha Hunt (pictured below).

Tyleisha serves as the Substance Abuse Program Coordinator for the Alcoholism & Chemical Dependency Program (ACDP East) at Lumberton, a 90-day program that promotes innovation, rehabilitation and protection through the planning and implementation of substance use disorder screening, treatment, and reintegration services within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.

Nearly all of the participants have self-enrolled, rather than being ordered to take the program by the prison system or a judge, making this a highly effective pathway to wholeness. Brian enjoyed his time with them immensely.

"Thank you, Tyleisha, for welcoming me to Lumberton CI and for all you and your amazing team are doing to give hope to my brothers, and a special thanks to Warden Britt," Brian said. "Can't wait to come back in the summer for the graduation party!"

Road Trip! Beep, beep!

Our Executive Director is traveling to three prisons in three days, starting yesterday with a visit to Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton.

Joining Brian at SCI was Phillip Holloway, Program Coordinator for the Office of Digital Opportunity at the North Carolina Department of Information Technology.

Brian and Phillip spoke with about 30 men. Brian shared from his own reentry journey and showed off a Digital Opportunity First Aid Reentry Kit, which every person returning from SCI receives on the day of their release.

Phillip let the men know that people all across state government want them to succeed and that NCDIT prioritizes expanding digital access and literacy for people returning after incarceration.

Indeed, our Digital Opportunity First Aid Reentry Kit is funded by a grant we received from NCDIT in 2024, proving Phillip's point.

Thank you, Warden Van Gorder and your amazing team, for welcoming us and allowing us to speak with the men. We value our partnership with SCI.

And make sure you check back tomorrow to read all about Day 2 of the Road Trip!

If you live or work in the Durham area, we encourage you to visit the Mobile Solitary Confinement Exhibit at the BC Plaza on campus at Duke University this Wednesday, March 4, anytime between Noon and 4pm.

Hosted by the Duke Justice Project, and developed by End Solitary NC, this exhibit is a near-exact replica of an actual solitary confinement cell. The exhibit, which includes personal stories and testimonies, challenges stereotypes, raises awareness, educates on mental health impacts, and encourages dialogue.

"I've seen firsthand how solitary confinement makes people worse than they were before their confinement," says OurJourney Executive Director Brian Scott. "It's time we ended it in North Carolina--really ended it, not just call it by another name, not use policy loop holes to prop it up."
