Yesterday, I had the most amazing conversations at the Shades of Red Culture Fair — hearing people define culture in their own words, learning how others see Franklin County through fresh eyes, and watching the youth show up and support each other was everything !

What surprised me most? The majority of people I spoke with weren’t even from here or haven’t been here long — and hearing those outside perspectives on our community was genuinely beautiful.

To every student, educator, and community member who stopped by and opened up — thank you. These are the conversations we should be having at home, in our schools, and in our communities.

And a very special shoutout to Emanuel, President of the .shadesofred club 🙏🏾 — this young man has poured into this community and will be graduating this year. I wish you nothing but greatness young man!

Foster these conversations at home, y’all. Talk to ya kids! That’s where it all starts !

Prime example of Franklin County Culture .. ain’t nothing wrong with it ! lol

Franklin County Parks and Recreation announced a mullet competition will be held July 2 at 8 p.m. during the Rocky Mount Rotary Independence Festival.

Organizers said the event will feature youth, teen and adult divisions, with prizes and bragging rights up for grabs.

Registration is set to open May 1 at PlayFranklinCounty.com.

Despite everything we’ve been through this year… I made a promise — to my elders, to our ancestors, and to our community — to keep going. And like Darlene and Joe Swain would say, “If you gon’ do it, you betta do it right.”

So before this year ends, I want to host a meeting with anyone who wants to be part of the planning committee for the 26th Annual Warren Street Festival.

Viola Ford Fletcher, the oldest living survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, has died at 111. She carried the trauma of 1921 for over a century and still had the courage to demand truth + reparations. We must honor her by continuing the fight for justice that was denied. 💔💚🖤🕊
