Dear Friends of RMCC,

I am writing with an important notification about our concert this Sunday, May 3. Due to an underground fire near the church on Wednesday, there is no electrical power at First Presbyterian, so we are moving the location of our concert to First Christian Church in Wilson. The address for the church is 207 Tarboro Street NE, and the concert will still begin at 4:00pm. We are grateful to our friends in Wilson, and we hope you will be able to join us there.

Sincerely,
James S. Smith, Director

Dear Friends of RMCC,

The Rocky Mount Chamber Choir will complete their eleventh season of concerts with performances in Rocky Mount and Cary. The Rocky Mount performance will be at the choir's "home base" of First Presbyterian Church, 153 North Church St., at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3rd. Two weeks later on Sunday, May 17 at 4:00 p.m., the choir will perform at Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church, 200 High Meadow Dr., Cary, N.C. A free will offering will be collected at the Cary concert to assist residents in the area who are in need of or who are losing housing.

The theme of this year's Spring concert is "Songs of Faith, Hope, and Perseverance." The choir of 25 singers will open the program with F. Melius Christiansen's revised 1957 arrangement of his "Praise to the Lord." Ola Gjielo's (b. 1978) beautiful "Ubi Caritas" (Where charity and love are, God is there.) with its improvisatory-like piano accompaniment follows. The program continues with Elaine Hagenberg's "My Song in the Night" and a setting of the Welsh folk song "All Through the Night." Shawn Kirchner's "Cornerstone" closes the first half of the concert.

In the second half, Marianne Forman's "The Gift to Sing" and Sarah Quartel's "Sing, My Child" both suggest that "...when troubles come, gather your strength and hear your voice. Sing." For a change of pace, the women of the choir next offer an arrangement of the Irish children's song "I'll Tell My Ma." This humorous tune includes extensive body percussion. The men follow with an arrangement of Edvard Grieg's "Brothers, Sing On." Three spirituals close the program: "Lord, If I Got My Ticket, Can I Ride?" - "Give Me Jesus" - "Rock-A My Soul."

Both concerts are free and open to the public.

The annual Christmas Concert by the Rocky Mount Chamber Choir will take place at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon, December 14th, at 4:00PM.

The first half of the program will feature the 22 members of the choir, who will sing both sacred and secular selections, including arrangements of "O Come, All Ye Faithful" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Additional singers from the Rocky Mount community will join the choir for the second half of the program. The choir of 45 singers, accompanied by a chamber orchestra of a dozen instrumentalists, will sing mostly popular songs of the season, including "The Christmas Waltz," a 1954 classic written for Frank Sinatra; the well-known "Christmas Time Is Here" from the 1965 TV special "A Charlie Brown Christmas;" and a set of variations on “Jingle Bells,” all accompanied by a chamber orchestra.

As is our tradition at our Christmas concerts, a free will offering will be collected to support a local Rocky Mount charity. As always, the performance is free and open to the public.
