Welcome to our third annual "Show Us Your Santas!" celebration!

We are pleased to announce that we received so many photos from VFW Post and Auxiliary members of their holiday events featuring costumed characters that we are going to be sharing them for FOUR straight days - Tuesday through Friday - a full day longer than last year!

All photos were sent in by members from across the country and beyond its borders featuring holiday parties, children's festivities, fundraisers, Auxiliary meetings, VA visits and community events during which they, or Post members, made appearances as Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Grinch, Rudolph, Frosty, elves, clowns, unicorns or other fun figures.

Thank you to all who've participated! We love seeing all you do for our veterans, service members, children, people in need and those in your local communities who could use a bit of holiday cheer.

Rockwell Auxiliary 9134 joined the Post, the Military Order of the Cootie, the Marine Corps League and other guest volunteers at the Nazareth Children's Home last weekend, where they hosted a Christmas party for foster youth residing in the group home.

Volunteers included Post 9134 Commander Anthony Rogers, Auxiliary 9134 President Dawn Fink, Auxiliary Senior Vice-President Nicole Panteleakos, VFW District 12 Commander Tim Woods, Auxiliary District 12 President Theresa Billips (Auxiliary 3006), Auxiliary 1119 President Heather Dean Woods, National Secretary-Treasurer Ann Panteleakos (Auxiliary 5446 - CT), and a number of Post and Auxiliary members. Special guests Santa, the Grinch and miss Cindy Lou Who chatted and posed for photos. After enjoying a taco bar and desserts, Santa gave each teenager a gift card so they could pick their own presents, plus every youth in attendance left with a full stocking, courtesy of the Post and Auxiliary, and festive party favors that were made by President Dawn.

(Photos of foster youth are not permitted; all pictured are Post/Auxiliary members.)

Each December, Andersonville National Historic Site in Georgia takes part in Wreaths Across America to honor and remember the sacrifice of our nation’s service members during the holiday season.

With the help of Wreaths Across America and other dedicated partners, thousands of wreaths are placed across the hallowed grounds of Andersonville National Cemetery. Their shared goal is simple and powerful: to honor all 20,000 graves with a wreath.

This year’s ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 13, with wreath placement following a brief noon program honoring each branch of the military. Volunteers are welcome to help place wreaths and pay tribute to those who served.

To learn how to volunteer or sponsor a wreath, visit: https://www.nps.gov/ande/planyourvisit/wreaths-event.htm

Today is Sesame Street Day!

In honor of this, we invite you to support your local little ones through our Youth Activities initiative, Patriotism Through Literacy. The purpose of this is to foster a love of learning and a better understanding of America through reading, specifically diverse, inclusive and fun historical fiction and creative non-fiction.

Elmo Doodle Dandy by Naomi Kleinberg is one of many books we recommend for read-alouds, while Talking About Deployment: A Sesame Street Resource by Charlotte Reed is helpful for parents whose kids are struggling to understand separation. Donate these to local schools, daycares, doctors offices, libraries, shelters and military bases to reach kids in need.

Additionally, families with young children dealing with parental deployment can also check out Sesame Streets resources for military families here: https://sesamestreetformilitaryfamilies.org/

These include tips for parents and videos for children to help with managing the stress, confusion and separation during that difficult time.
