“Discipline And Reward”

We often speak of the law of God, yet we could merely speak of the disciplines of God. God calls us to be a people of order, and that order is governed by disciplines according to the direction of God. In today’s Gospel reading, we hear one of the best-known sermons/teachings of Jesus in the Beatitudes. This teaching, given as part of the Sermon on the Mount, teaches us disciplines of life that bring about Heavenly rewards. Most people embrace the reward and yet reject the discipline. You cannot have one without the other. The Word of God calls us to embrace the discipline and enjoy the reward.

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain,
and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him.
He began to teach them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven.”

“Holy Food for Holy People”

There is food that feeds our stomach, and then there is food that feeds our soul. We have all heard that saying, “you are what you eat”. If we eat good food, our body will respond, and if we eat bad food, it will likewise be evidenced by our body. So it is with our soul. If we feed our souls with the things of this world, they will become malnourished, sick, and even die. Jesus has come to offer us food to feed our souls. Whether speaking to the Apostles or today as He speaks to the crowd, His message is the same: “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life within you.” This was difficult for people to accept then, and for many it is now. That difficulty does not negate the truth of the Word of God. God has given holy food for a holy people.

Jesus said to the Jewish crowds:
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give
is my flesh for the life of the world."
The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying,
"How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
Jesus said to them,
"Amen, amen, I say to you,
unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
you do not have life within you.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood
has eternal life,
and I will raise him on the last day.
For my flesh is true food,
and my blood is true drink.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood
remains in me and I in him.
Just as the living Father sent me
and I have life because of the Father,
so also the one who feeds on me
will have life because of me.
This is the bread that came down from heaven.
Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died,
whoever eats this bread will live forever."

"He Desires Our Essence"

How do we give ourselves to the Lord? Is it through a Sunday obligation? Is it through serving others? Is it through championing good causes? All of these things are good, yet in any of them are we giving of the very essence of our being? In today's Gospel reading, Jesus sits opposite the treasury and tells us the story of the "widow's mite". This is not a parable; it is a life-as-it-happens story. Jesus tells the people that the widow's offering is the greatest because most contribute from their surplus, but she, from her poverty (her very essence). How do we give ourselves to the Lord?
May we come to give of our very essence!

He sat down opposite the treasury
and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury.
Many rich people put in large sums.
A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents.
Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them,
“Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more
than all the other contributors to the treasury.
For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth,
but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had,
her whole livelihood.”

“Peace Comes From The Law”

Where does true peace come from? Is it a vacation, an outdoor activity, or being with someone you love? No, peace comes from God, and to find true peace, we must find ourselves living in and of the law of God. God’s law is a shelter against the flesh and the world. It is given to us for guidance and protection. In today’s Psalm, we are reminded of the great peace that comes from loving the law of God, as only His peace can calm the storms of this life and lead us to His presence in everlasting life.

Though my persecutors and my foes are many,
I turn not away from your decrees.
R. O Lord, great peace have they who love your law.
Permanence is your word’s chief trait;
each of your just ordinances is everlasting.
R. O Lord, great peace have they who love your law.
Princes persecute me without cause
but my heart stands in awe of your word.
R. O Lord, great peace have they who love your law.
Those who love your law have great peace,
and for them there is no stumbling block.
R. O Lord, great peace have they who love your law.
I wait for your salvation, O LORD,
and your commands I fulfill.
R. O Lord, great peace have they who love your law.
I keep your precepts and your decrees,
for all my ways are before you.
R. O Lord, great peace have they who love your law.

“A Story Of Love”

If our life starts and ends with love, we will have had a good life. The story of creation, the story of the Torah, the stories of the Prophets, the stories of the Gospel, and the Epistles have one underlying message: LOVE. In today’s Gospel, Jesus is asked about the greatest of the commandments. His response is love. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love is the great equalizer against all forms of discrimination. May we live a life of love and find peace in our day.

One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him,
“Which is the first of all the commandments?”
Jesus replied, “The first is this:
Hear, O Israel!
The Lord our God is Lord alone!
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, with all your mind,
and with all your strength.
The second is this:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no other commandment greater than these.”
The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher.
You are right in saying,
He is One and there is no other than he.
And to love him with all your heart,
with all your understanding,
with all your strength,
and to love your neighbor as yourself
is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding,
he said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.”
And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

“Heaven And Earth”

So many people want to have earthly things in Heaven, i.e., baseball, golf, fishing, etc. Heaven is not like earth; that is the good news. In Heaven, the things of this world go away, and there we experience Heavenly things. In today’s Gospel, Jesus addresses the difference between Heavenly and earthly understanding and reminds us that God is the God of the living and not the dead.

Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection,
came to Jesus and put this question to him, saying,
“Teacher, Moses wrote for us,
If someone’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child,
his brother must take the wife
and raise up descendants for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers.
The first married a woman and died, leaving no descendants.
So the second brother married her and died, leaving no descendants,
and the third likewise.
And the seven left no descendants.
Last of all the woman also died.
At the resurrection when they arise whose wife will she be?
For all seven had been married to her.”
Jesus said to them, “Are you not misled
because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
When they rise from the dead,
they neither marry nor are given in marriage,
but they are like the angels in heaven.
As for the dead being raised,
have you not read in the Book of Moses,
in the passage about the bush, how God told him,
I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob?
He is not God of the dead but of the living.
You are greatly misled.”

“Render Unto……..”

Christians today severely struggle with submission to authority, yet Sacred Scripture speaks about the necessity for submission in many places. How we submit to the authority of the earth is evidence of how we will submit to the authority of Heaven. How we respect our earthly father and mother is evidence of how we will respect our Heavenly Father. In today’s Gospel reading, we find a story that most of us are very familiar with. Jesus is being tested/tricked by the Pharisees and Herodians as they ask him if it is lawful to pay tax to Caesar. Jesus, knowing all things, realizes that this is not a sincere question; it is yet one more attempt to trap Him. He responds with the consistent message of God. If it belongs to Caesar (the authority of the day), then give it to Caesar, and if it belongs to God, give it to God. In this passage, I am also reminded of a passage from the Old Testament where God says that He can even use evil men to accomplish His will. May we find ourselves obedient and respectful to authority so that we may evidence our reverence for God.
,
Some Pharisees and Herodians were sent
to Jesus to ensnare him in his speech.
They came and said to him,
“Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man
and that you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion.
You do not regard a person’s status
but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.
Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?
Should we pay or should we not pay?”
Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them,
“Why are you testing me?
Bring me a denarius to look at.”
They brought one to him and he said to them,
“Whose image and inscription is this?”
They replied to him, “Caesar’s.”
So Jesus said to them,
“Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar
and to God what belongs to God.”
They were utterly amazed at him.
