This weekend, Pack 6134 joined with our feeder troop, Troop 613 and held a 2-night Sabbath-Observant Campout. Our scouts arrived Friday afternoon before sundown, helping to setup the Eiruv (a symbolic wall that encloses our campsite), a synagogue tent for prayer services, and all the food and other setup needed for any campout. The event was the epitome of A SCOUT IS REVERENT, fusing Jewish and Scout values. Over the weekend, our scouts read from the Torah and led services, went hiking, learned how to use a compass, delved into topics about Judaism, played games and enjoyed the beautiful weather we had.
Then after Shabbat was over last night, we had a beautiful cracker-barrel, with roasted marshmallows, ice cream sandwiches, skits and songs. This morning, we once again read from the Torah, in honor of the beginning of the new Jewish month.
Our scouts learned a nifty new recipe - omelet in a ziplock bag.

While cleaning and packing out site, our scouts encountered a 3-foot long black rat snake. And finally, before departing, our oldest cubs earned their whittling adventure, learning how to safely care for and handle pocket knives, while our younger cubs were introduced to the basic knots every scout should learn.

We are grateful to the Greenbelt Campgrounds and the National Park Service for being such amazing and accommodating hosts.

It was a wonderful weekend, that brought out the best in scouts!

Our pack had a nice hike at Wheaton Regional Park this afternoon. Starting at Brookside Nature Center, we walked to the Pine Lake, where we saw a bald eagle flying, then made our way to the Brookside Garden, where our scouts got to watch the large snapping turtles.

VROOOOM!!!! Pack 6134 had an amazing race day yesterday at our annual Pinewood Derby! Our scouts showed off their creativity with their personalized derby cars, then raced them to find our champions. We had 17 scouts participating, plus several younger siblings ("dragon scouts") and even adult participation - we even had a classic-car showdown between a car from 1991 and a derby car from 1961!

We also celebrated derby day with a photo-booth where scouts could get their own pinewood derby driver's license, a coloring station, a marble maze station, and delicious snackfood.

When our scouts weren't racing, they were standing along the side of the track, cheering on their friends and having a great time!

Pack 6134 had a great time today visiting the Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium! After getting our tickets to see the planetarium show, we went on a quick 1/3 mile hike, enjoying the first beautiful spring warmth. Then, our scouts got to go in and enjoy learning about the night sky right over Washington DC!

We learned how Rock Creek Planetarium is the only one that is part of the national park service, how it was founded in the 1960s along with the development of our national space program.
We also learned about dozens of constellations in the sky - everything from Ursa Major/the big dipper to Casiopia - and about how, in the right light, we can see Venus, Jupiter, and even the Andromeda Galaxy!

I dare say today's meeting was ... out of this world!

Yesterday, our pack met at for our very first pinewood derby workshop! We had stations for tracing designs, cutting out our cars, sanding and weighing, and painting. The scouts had a great time designing their cars and customizing their colors. They have the next few weeks to put the finishing touches on before we hold our pack pinewood derby race next month!

We had a great pack/den meeting today!
Our scouts played “Broom Ball” working on teamwork and some hand-eye coordination.
Then we split into dens:
Our Lions and Tigers learned about the technology around us how it helps us and how to use it safely. They even toured Berman Hebrew Academy to see what technology there is in the school!
Our Wolves practiced writing and deciphering codes, and learning about patterns and coordinates
Our bears learned about knife safety and practiced whittling on bars of soap.
We closed out our meeting by distributing pinewood derby kits for our scouts to start working on their cars.

Scouting is ALSO about serving the community.
Last Saturday night, our older scouts helped out at
the jointly-hosted (Berman Hebrew Academy/ Kehilat Pardes - The Rock Creek Synagogue) annual Havdalah in Pajamas celebration!

Our wolves, bears, and AOLs assisted with setup and cleanup, and ran three stations for the program!

Scouting is all about learning and today, we had a special STEM-themed meeting. We studied how air can be used to propel objects, creating balloon-fueled cars and racing ping-pong balls by blowing at them with straws. We learned all about static electricity, making aluminum foil dance and lifting salt and pepper without touching them, plus a special demonstration of a Van De Graff generator. We tested how an egg will float or sink in different kinds of water, and learned how oil and water don't mix (and what happens when you try). We also got to make our own kid friendly circuits! The scouts had a great time testing their gizmos and gadgets - and of course, playing with all the leftover balloons!

We had a great meeting today where our cubs learned about CITIZENSHIP.
For our Lion and Tiger scouts, that meant learning about their roles in their families, the importance of rules, and the value in teamwork.
For our Wolf Scouts, it was learning about caring for the American flag, and about being citizens of a community, including building a mock-neighborhood.
Our Bear scouts focused on national citizenship, learning about different symbols of America, crafting their very own Statue of Liberty Torches, and finding out about how non-profits help the community.
Our AOL Scout came up with a plan for an upcoming service project including games for preschool age children.

Finally All of our scouts also learned about the value of showing gratitude to those who keep our community safe, writing Thank You cards to our local firefighters, which we will deliver in a few weeks just in time for the holidays.
