Despite the cold forecast, Pack 6134 went out Saturday night for our first ever backyard campout - Sleeping in tents and enjoying an energetic and fun campfire, all without ever having to leave the community! For many of our scouts, this was their first tent-camping experience, and it was a hit!

After setting up our tents, we stayed warm around a glowing campfire, roasting marshmallows, making smores, and being entertained by songs and skits. Then families got cozy in their tents overnight, waking up to welcomed cups of hot cocoa (and coffee for the grownups!)

As a bonus, our host, in addition to having room for a dozen tents, also had a small farm of her own, and this morning, she taught our scouts all about how she takes care of her goats, chickens, bee hive, and and garden full of gourds!

Thank you so much to our host, and to all of pack 6134 for making this such a spectacular event!

It was a day of learning about working together as a team as our pack met for the first official meeting of the year, and then broke up into individual dens.
As we gathered, our scouts started by painting rulers - the first step in building our adventure loop displays. Then we had our flag ceremony, and learned what it means to be a pack, and individual dens.
Our first real lesson in teamwork was when the dens had to transport a pingpong ball across the room. The younger dens carried the "treasure" ping pong ball on a paper-plate "raft", while the older scouts tried creating a continuous ramp using construction paper.
The dens then learned more about the individual scouts: Lions introduced themselves while each did an individual physical move, such as a half-hand stand, dancing in circles, or standing on one leg. Older dens played two-truths-one-lie, and untangled a human knot.

Then, it was a game of Cups and Downs, where the scouts worked as two teams, trying to get more cups facing their chosen direction than the opposing team.

Time to get excited for our upcoming backyard campout next week - the scouts scrounged around the room, looking for things you need to bring on a campout: everything from a tent to a sleeping bag to a flashlight. Our meeting closed out with scouts receiving their earned adventures from the summer, and each den showing us how loud they could represent their dens!

Many of our scouts have off this week for the Sukkot Holiday - the Jewish holiday that says it's time to go outside into nature. So our pack decided to do just that with a hike on the Billy Goat Trail! Our cubs got to walk along the Potomac River, spend a few minutes exploring it's banks, climb over rocks and waterfalls, and even practice how to turn acorn shells into whistles (with varying levels of success). A fun and exhausting morning for everyone!

What do you get when you combine cub scout camping, Shabbat, and gathering from up and down the east cost? The Scout Kinus of course!
This weekend, members of our pack joined with other cub and troop scouts from DC, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York at Scout Kinus, held in Pipersville PA. The drive up was well worth it as our scouts had an amazing time - camping in tents, learning scout skills, playing games, celebrating shabbat with 140 fellow scouts and scouters, including a massive joint kiddush and ending with a beautiful Havdallah ceremony.
Our cubs got to do wood working, cooking, learning about tying tzitit knots, and blowing shofar.
They enjoyed and participated in two campfires - one on saturday night, and one again on Sunday afternoon just before the event ended. We sang songs and did skits, and laughed and played.
Our cubs went on a hike, explored the mud, and found worms and frogs, all while building relationships with fellow scouts from near and far away.
Such a great way to start off our new scout year!

Yesterday, our cubs got together to enjoy the summer and brush up on their swimming skills! Our older scouts passed their full swimmers test, swimming multiple strokes; they practiced basic water reach and throw rescues; and learned about key saftey for swimmers - discussing everything from the importance of using sunscreen to treating hypothermia.
Meanwhile, our younger scouts showed their emerging skills, practicing jumping, blowing bubbles, and seeing how far they could swim with their legs and arms.
After the hard work, all the scouts got to splash and play while making sure to use the buddy system.
Thanks to Kemp Mill Swim Club for hosting our pack for the third year in a row!

Pack 6134 along with fellow-Jewish-scout Pack 5776 served as color guard at tonight's Bethesda Big Train Baseball game against the Olney Crop Dusters. Today was Jewish Heritage Night at the game, and so they recognized multiple Jewish organizations that serve Montgomery County, including both Pack 6134 and pack 5776.
After the national anthem, our scouts got to stay and watch a great game of baseball: The Crop Dusters took an early lead, but Big Train came back with a five-run inning at the bottom of the fourth. We root-root-rooted for the home team, and they came out on top with a 7-4 win. Thanks to Bethesda Big Train Baseball for having us!

On Sunday, Pack 6134 celebrated a year of learning, growth, and accomplishments at our Blue and Gold Dinner! It was so exciting to be able to acknowledge all of the amazing things our scouts did this year, earning their adventure belt loops, and badges of ranks. Three scouts earned special awards for special efforts with national religious scout awards. And every scout was given a special gift, representing something they had done this year. Finally, our scouts were all "stepped up" officially moving from lion to tiger, tiger to wolf, wolf to bear, and bear to Webelos.

And even as we are so proud of our amazing cubs, we are already looking forward to the next year in scouting!

This weekend, Pack 6134 joined with our feeder troop, Troop 613 and held a 2-night Sabbath-Observant Campout. Our scouts arrived Friday afternoon before sundown, helping to setup the Eiruv (a symbolic wall that encloses our campsite), a synagogue tent for prayer services, and all the food and other setup needed for any campout. The event was the epitome of A SCOUT IS REVERENT, fusing Jewish and Scout values. Over the weekend, our scouts read from the Torah and led services, went hiking, learned how to use a compass, delved into topics about Judaism, played games and enjoyed the beautiful weather we had.
Then after Shabbat was over last night, we had a beautiful cracker-barrel, with roasted marshmallows, ice cream sandwiches, skits and songs. This morning, we once again read from the Torah, in honor of the beginning of the new Jewish month.
Our scouts learned a nifty new recipe - omelet in a ziplock bag.

While cleaning and packing out site, our scouts encountered a 3-foot long black rat snake. And finally, before departing, our oldest cubs earned their whittling adventure, learning how to safely care for and handle pocket knives, while our younger cubs were introduced to the basic knots every scout should learn.

We are grateful to the Greenbelt Campgrounds and the National Park Service for being such amazing and accommodating hosts.

It was a wonderful weekend, that brought out the best in scouts!

Our pack had a nice hike at Wheaton Regional Park this afternoon. Starting at Brookside Nature Center, we walked to the Pine Lake, where we saw a bald eagle flying, then made our way to the Brookside Garden, where our scouts got to watch the large snapping turtles.

VROOOOM!!!! Pack 6134 had an amazing race day yesterday at our annual Pinewood Derby! Our scouts showed off their creativity with their personalized derby cars, then raced them to find our champions. We had 17 scouts participating, plus several younger siblings ("dragon scouts") and even adult participation - we even had a classic-car showdown between a car from 1991 and a derby car from 1961!

We also celebrated derby day with a photo-booth where scouts could get their own pinewood derby driver's license, a coloring station, a marble maze station, and delicious snackfood.

When our scouts weren't racing, they were standing along the side of the track, cheering on their friends and having a great time!
