Sepsis is fatal in up to 40% of people who develop it, and is the world's leading cause of death in children.

Early diagnosis and improved care are among the things researchers are doing to better understand and stop it. Read more in the May issue of The Physiologist Magazine:

Preeclampsia affects Black women at disproportionately high rates, but scientists are still working to understand why.

Researchers examined placentas from Black and white women with preeclampsia. Expecting to find stronger signs of disease in the placentas of Black patients, they found that several biological markers linked to preeclampsia, as well as signs of placental damage, were more pronounced in white patients.

The findings suggest that preeclampsia may affect the placenta differently in different racial groups, highlighting the importance of studying diverse populations to better understand the disease and improve care.

How does your body help you jump higher?

Higher hops require more than just muscle power—they also rely on rapid communication between your muscles and nervous system.

New research shows that as people hop higher, their calf muscles work harder and spinal reflexes become more active, especially around the moment the feet contact the ground.

Researchers also found that these reflex responses change throughout the hopping cycle and are dialed down during landing, likely helping the body absorb impact safely.

The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has proposed sweeping changes to how federal research grants are awarded and managed. These changes would affect every scientist who receives federal funding.

APS has submitted a formal letter to OMB requesting an extension of the comment period and is developing formal comments for submission before the July 13 deadline. Read more about what the rule entails, and how you can add your comment: https://ow.ly/7ju150Z7J5y

The White House Office of Management and Budget has proposed sweeping changes to federal research grant-making that would affect every scientist who receives federal funding.

Among the many provisions: Grant funding decisions would be made by political appointees, with expert-led peer review downgraded to only an advisory role. Active grants could be terminated at any time if they are deemed out of alignment with agency priorities. Other provisions would impact researchers’ ability to publish, attend conferences, and collaborate with colleagues in other countries.
APS is submitting formal comments and coordinating other actions with coalition partners across the scientific community. Individual comments also carry significant weight in this process. The deadline to submit your comment is July 13.
Watch APS Science Policy Director Rebecca Osthus explain what’s at stake and what you can do.
