MC Family Justice Center Foundation

Our mission is to end abuse of all ages through education and programs that assist victims of abuse.

The mission of the MCFJC Foundation is to raise awareness about power-based relationship abuse in families, teens, and the elderly. By working with community partners to harness our combined resources, we provide support to victims of domestic violence and their children and promote healthy dating relationships among teenagers. We are dedicated to ending violence and abuse of all ages and promoting healing after abuse.

When domestic violence escalates, children can be pulled into the danger. Research shows that domestic violence and child maltreatment often overlap, which means domestic violence prevention and child safety cannot be separated.

A child may be threatened, used to control a parent, or hurt while trying to step in. They may live in a constant state of watching, listening, and trying to stay safe.
This is why early support matters.

When a victim is safer, children are safer. When warning signs are recognized earlier, children are safer. When families can reach confidential resources, safety planning, and emergency support before danger escalates, children are safer.

Children do not have to be physically hurt to be harmed by domestic violence. Research shows that children exposed to domestic violence can experience serious emotional, behavioral, developmental, and health impacts. These effects can look similar to those seen in children who are directly abused.

For young children especially, trauma may show up through changes in behavior, sleep, attachment, learning, or development.
A child may regress after being toilet trained. They may begin wetting the bed, having nightmares, becoming more clingy, struggling with separation anxiety, losing developmental skills, experiencing delays in speech or learning, or having trouble sleeping, concentrating, or feeling safe.

That is why domestic violence prevention must include children. It means helping victims reach safety, supporting children who have been exposed to violence at home, and building homes and communities where warning signs are recognized earlier.

Not every family has access to a safe or reliable car. With support from the Maryland Bar Foundation, MCFJCF’s LifeLine Essential Support Line Program provided Uber and Lyft gift cards to victims of domestic violence and their children.

These rides can help families get to the Family Justice Center, court, medical care, or another safe location when transportation is not available or when using a shared vehicle may not be safe.

We did it! With the help of donors and volunteers, we were able to create 185 shelf stable spaghetti dinner kits last month. Thank you to everyone who was involved in this successful fundraiser. Words matter. The way domestic violence is described can shape how people understand it. Too often, headlines use language that makes violence sound sudden, private, or unavoidable.

“Woman dies after dispute.” “Family argument ends in death.” “Crime of passion.”

These phrases can hide accountability. They can make domestic violence sound like a mutual conflict instead of a pattern of power, control, threats, fear, and escalating danger.

Instead of “woman dies after dispute,” say: “Woman killed in alleged domestic violence homicide.”
Instead of “family argument ends in death,” say: “Fatal violence often has warning signs before it becomes a headline.”

Domestic violence is not just a private dispute. It is a public safety issue. When we name it clearly, we help the community understand it clearly. And when we understand it clearly, we are better prepared to prevent it.

Abusers will often destroy a victim’s phone or track its whereabouts as an act of power and control and to further isolate the victim. The Family Justice Center has partnered with the 911 Cell Phone Bank to provide victims of domestic violence with a phone so they can call 911 in case of an emergency, stay in touch with their support networks, and make necessary service appointments.

To continue the success of this program, the 911 Cell Phone Bank relies on old and used cell phone donations from the community to be able to provide these phones. If you have any cell phones (both smartphones and flip phones) and chargers to donate, please drop them off at the Montgomery County Family Justice Center.

Listen without judgment. Believe what they share. Offer support, options, and resources.
