As a young child, Jason struggled to manage his emotions and often felt isolated at school. Everything changed when he found support at The Lourie Center for Children's Social & Emotional Wellness, where he discovered confidence, structure and a sense of belonging. Along the way, he developed a love for chess and history, persevered through setbacks, became a leader with Best Buddies International and is now studying special education in college.

Jason hopes to return to The Lourie Center one day as a teacher, inspired by the people who helped shape his life. His story is a reminder that with the right support, encouragement and determination, struggles can become strength and purpose.

At The Lourie Center Head Start program, we’re proud to partner with families to help young children grow, learn, and get ready for kindergarten. Our federally funded program supports children’s education, health, nutrition, and social‑emotional development, both in the classroom and through home‑based services.

A huge thank-you to Children’s National Hospital Mobile Health for providing free health screenings, physical assessments and vaccinations for our students at the Prince George's County location. This partnership not only supports children’s well-being but also helps us meet our required Non-Federal Share (in-kind) contribution. A true win-win for our kids and families!

How much screen time feels “right” in your home?

If it feels like a daily negotiation, you’re not alone.

Here's a simple guide:
👶 Under 2: Avoid screens when possible
🎨 Ages 3–5: Around 1 hour of high-quality content
📚 Ages 6+: Set steady limits and protect sleep, homework and family time

Small shifts matter - a book before bed, a walk after dinner, a device-free meal.

Healthy habits aren't about perfection. They're about connection.
