A new direction for treating a deadly brain cancer. 🧠

A first in Israel. A new direction for treating a deadly brain cancer. 🧠

For the first time in Israel, neurosurgeons at the Hadassah Medical Organization have used intracranial Alpha DaRT® radiation therapy to treat a patient with recurrent glioblastoma — one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-treat brain tumors.

Led by Dr. Yigal Shoshan, HMO director of Neurosurgery, Oncology and Stereotactic Radiosurgery, the procedure is part of a Phase 1 clinical trial exploring a potentially new approach to treating recurrent glioblastoma.

What makes Alpha DaRT different? The technology delivers highly localized alpha radiation directly within the tumor, with the goal of maximizing tumor destruction while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy brain tissue.

And in a world first, Dr. Shoshan and his team used two simultaneous trajectories to implant the radiation sources into a large tumor while maintaining precision.

This moment represents years of work — from laboratory research and preclinical studies to technological development and, now, clinical application.

“Seeing the technology reach a patient in Israel for the first time was an exciting moment for everyone who has been part of this journey,” said Dr. Shoshan.

It’s a powerful reminder of what can happen when research, technology and clinical expertise come together to pursue new possibilities for patients.

The attack at Central Synagogue in NYC during Friday night services is deeply disturbing. No one in any faith community should have to wonder whether they are safe simply because they have come together to worship. We are grateful for the swift response of law enforcement and synagogue security and for everyone who worked to protect those inside.

This is yet another troubling incident as antisemitism continues to rise. We cannot ignore the connection between words that vilify, dehumanize and demonize the Jewish community and the actions that can follow. Nor can we ignore the role that inflammatory anti-Israel rhetoric plays in fueling antisemitism.

We each have a responsibility to speak out against antisemitism. In the public and private sector, those in leadership carry a responsibility to call it out and reject rhetoric that puts Jewish people in danger.

Americans of all faiths should be able to worship without fear. Yet 2025 was one of the most violent years on record for the Jewish community, with nearly 530 incidents of harassment recorded at synagogues. Tell Congress to help keep all faith communities safe and pass the bipartisan Right to Worship Act!

As widespread resistance to common antibiotics rises globally, a new global project — funded by a European Union grant — will bring together 20 research and clinical partners from 13 countries to investigate whether bacteriophages — viruses that naturally infect and destroy bacteria — can serve as a safe and effective alternative to conventional antibiotic therapies.

Dr. Ran Nir-Paz of the Hadassah Medical Organization, who will help lead the Israeli contingent, is one of the pioneers of clinical use of phages to treat hard to eradicate bacterial infections, and a co-leader of the Israeli Phage Therapy Center.
