We're proud to welcome Manuel "Manny" Geraldo, Esq. to the MCCC Board of Directors.

Manny serves as Director of Government Affairs at Washington Gas, leading Maryland state government relations and public policy. Before that, he spent nearly a decade working inside government — as a senior legislative staffer at the DC Council and as an attorney at the District Department of Energy & Environment.

That background is rare at the board level. Someone who has navigated both sides of the policy table, and now operates at the intersection of energy, business, and public policy for one of the region's most essential utilities.

His focus on building practical partnerships between business, government, and community stakeholders aligns directly with what MCCC does every day — advocating at the county, state, and federal level on behalf of the businesses that make Montgomery County run.

We're glad to have his perspective at the table.

Welcome, Manny. 👏

Just under three weeks from now, 300 small business owners will be in the same building as federal procurement officers from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Montgomery County is the second-largest hub for federal contracting in the country, and for small businesses here that geography represents a real opportunity, but one that requires knowing how the process works and who the decision-makers are. MCCC's Small Business Industry Day on July 14 is designed to close that gap: a direct conversation, not a panel, not a webinar, but the people who make contracting decisions in the same room as the businesses that want to compete for them.

Space is capped at 300 attendees. Registration is open now.

The conversations MCCC is having with employers across Montgomery County right now share a few common threads.

Hiring is more deliberate than it was two years ago. Companies that were growing quickly are being more careful about where they add headcount and why. Federal workforce changes are creating ripple effects that go well beyond government contractors, touching commercial real estate, small business pipelines, nonprofit budgets, and workforce development programs across the region.

At the same time, businesses that are connected to the right people, the right policy conversations, and the right information are navigating this environment better than those that are not. That gap tends to widen during periods of uncertainty, not narrow.

This is what MCCC tracks, raises with county and state leaders, and brings back to the business community so employers can make decisions with a clearer picture of where the county is heading.

The hardest part of business growth is often knowing where to plug in, which conversations are worth your time, which relationships open doors, and which programs actually deliver what they promise.

On Wednesday, MCCC is hosting a virtual New Member Orientation for new and prospective members who want a clear picture of what membership actually makes possible. The session covers committees, advocacy resources, business connections, and how to get visible in the Montgomery County business community from the start, not six months in when you finally figure out what you should have done on day one.

It runs about an hour on Microsoft Teams and registration is required.

Communities do not stay competitive by accident. The counties and regions winning the competition for talent, investment, and business growth are not winning because of geography alone. They are winning because business leaders, policymakers, and community organizations made consistent, coordinated decisions over years to build the kind of environment people want to be in.

Montgomery County has the ingredients: one of the most educated workforces in the country, a world-class life sciences sector, proximity to the capital, and deep civic infrastructure. What those ingredients require is people who stay engaged, who show up to the conversations that shape the county's direction, and who are willing to advocate for the environment businesses need to grow.

That is the work MCCC does every week, and it compounds over time when the right people are in the room.

The hardest part of business growth is often not the product, the service, or even the strategy.

It’s knowing where to plug in.

It’s knowing which conversations are worth your time. Which relationships can open doors. And being aware of policy proposals that could affect your industry six months from now.

Most businesses do not struggle because they lack capability. They struggle because growth becomes harder in isolation.

That coordination and connection is where chambers matter.

MCCC brings business leaders, policymakers, employers, educators, and community partners into the same conversations because long-term economic momentum depends on people being connected before challenges become crises.

Over the past few weeks alone, those conversations have included workforce trends, federal workforce shifts, infrastructure, economic competitiveness, small business access, and the future of Montgomery County’s business climate.

For many businesses, the value is not just attending an event. It is understanding where the county is heading and being connected to the people helping to shape it.

Economic competitiveness is built on thousands of decisions, including how quickly businesses can move from planning to opening their doors.

This week, the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce testified in support of ZTA 26-05, a proposal that would expand expedited approvals for projects creating 200 or more jobs and for businesses in strategic industry sectors identified by the county's Economic Development Strategic Plan.

For employers considering where to invest and grow, predictability matters. Long approval timelines can slow hiring, delay investment, and make it harder for Montgomery County to compete with neighboring jurisdictions.

The Chamber supported this measure because attracting private-sector investment and creating new jobs should remain a priority for our county's future.

Advocacy isn't only about opposing harmful policies. It's also about supporting ideas that help businesses grow, create jobs, and strengthen our local economy.

Thank you to our Government Relations Committee members and business leaders who continue to help shape these conversations.
