USP develops standards and analytical methods that rely on fewer resources and more eco-friendly alternatives for the quality testing of medicines.

Happy birthday to Dr. William M. Heller on his 100th birthday this Sunday. Celebrating a century of life is remarkable. Celebrating a century shaped by service, leadership, and lasting impact makes this milestone truly extraordinary.

Over more than six decades, Dr. Heller’s contributions to USP and to public health include:
- A leading role in standardizing drug name pronunciations, working closely with the U.S. Adopted Names Council (USAN) to help reduce medication errors and improve patient safety
- A deeply respected mentor to generations of USP volunteers, whose guidance strengthened both individual contributors and the broader volunteer community
- Recipient of numerous honors, including the Re*****on Award and USP’s first Lifetime Achievement Award—later named the USP William M. Heller Lifetime Achievement Award in his honor

With sincere gratitude, thank you, Dr. Heller, for your lifetime of service and for the enduring example you have set for all who follow.

In continuing celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and all year long, we’re honored to recognize the contributions, cultures and voices of USP’s Latina Scientists. Meet Maria Monagas!

Dr. Monagas is a Principal Scientist in USP’s Department of Dietary Supplements and Herbal Medicines. She has a Ph.D in Food Science and Technology from the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain) and an MSc in Industrial Fermentation Technology from Heriot-Watt University (Scotland, United Kingdom). Before joining USP in 2013, she was a tenured track Research Scientist at the Spanish Scientific Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid, Spain.

At USP, Dr. Monagas is responsible for the development and review of USP monographs and General Chapters related to ingredients of botanical origin to be admitted into the USP-NF publication and the Dietary Supplements Compendium (DSC). She is also responsible for the USP Expert Panel on Botanical Dietary Supplements and Herbal Medicines for the Pan-American region.

Dr. Monagas has more than 20 years of experience in the analysis and characterization of botanical ingredients used in the production of dietary supplements. She has contributed to more than 70 scientific publications, including original articles, book chapters, and industrial patents.

Andrea loves chemistry! She graduated with a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UMBC and is eager to continue her education. She’s worked in cannabis, GMP laboratories, and continues her work at USP. Andrea is driven to turn her varied professional experience into a purposeful career in natural product chemistry. She loves cooking, plants, cats, cool patterns, and being Latina!
