A message from Denise Fredericks, President 2026-27

Thank you for allowing me to serve as the President of the Rockville Rotary Club for the 2026-27 year, it is truly an honor.

I have been a member of the Rockville Rotary Club since 2015, when I joined as the representative of our first corporate member, Montgomery Community Media. I currently serve as Director of Development at Mercy Health Clinic, also a corporate member.

As a nonprofit professional with over 25 years of direct experience with the social service needs of our community, I have collaborated with many of our nonprofit grantees. I will complete my Master of Public Health (MPH) in Practice and Policy in August. Public health is integrally related to many of the 7 pillars of the Rotary International Foundation’s work and a focus of much of my career.

I am deeply committed to this year’s Rotary International theme of Creating Lasting Change. As anthropologist Margaret Mead once said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” There is much work to do, and Rotary provides us with an opportunity to actively support meaningful, life-changing work, here and around the world. I look forward to working with you to create lasting change.

Greetings.

I thank the Rotary Club of Rockville for the opportunity to serve as the President of Rotary Club of Rockville in Rotary Year 2025-2026.

Rotary is committed to treating everyone with dignity and respect, allowing everyone's voice to be heard, and providing equitable opportunities for fellowship, service, and leadership.

I thank the Almighty, my family, my friends, my colleagues, my well-wishers, the Divine Collective of goodness, and all who and that support me.

I thank all who and that made my role as President of Rotary Club of Rockville for Rotary Year 2025-2026 worthwhile and fulfilling. I thank Rotary International for promoting integrity, respect, world understanding, goodwill, peace, fellowships, the ideals of service, among others.

I thank Rotary Year 2025-2026 members of the Rotary Club of Rockville Board, and the Committees Chairs for accepting to serve as Rotary Club of Rockville Officers in Rotary Year 2025-2026 and for their immense support and teamwork.

I thank members of Rotary Club of Rockville and former members of Rotary Club of Rockville in Rotary Year 2025-2026, whom I presented with Certificates of Appreciation, for their membership, for their supports, and for upholding the principles and objectives of Rotary International, and the Rotary Club of Rockville.

Profound thanks to Rotary Club of Nairobi Past Vice President Odudu Barbara Magoha for inviting my mother - Professor Sylvia George Akpan, and me to the Rotary Club of Nairobi meeting. Special thanks to Rotary Club of Nairobi, in Kenya. My attendance at the Rotary Club of Nairobi meeting inspired me to become a Rotarian. I am very grateful to my mother for taking me to Kenya in year 2009.

I was inducted as a Rotarian on October 10, 2009 and I became a member of the Rotary Club of Abuja, in Nigeria. I served as the Rotary Club of Abuja’s Club Services Director for Rotary Year 2009-2010, and Treasurer for Rotary Year 2010-2011 and for Rotary Year 2011-2012. I thank the Rotary Club of Abuja and the members of the Rotary Club of Abuja for enhancing my Rotary knowledge, experiences, and service.

I thank Hande Apaydin – Past President of Rotary Club of Rockville, who contacted me in year 2022 and invited me to speak about Peace at the Rotary Club of Rockville meeting. I became a member of Rotary Club of Rockville afterwards. Thank you Hande for being instrumental in my membership and leadership in Rotary Club of Rockville, where I served as the Peace Committee Chair for Rotary Years: 2022-2023. 2023-2024, and 2024-2025.

I thank Rotary International, Rotary International Rotary Year 2025-2026 President Francesco Arezzo, Rotary International Officers, Rotary International District 7620 Rotary Year 2025-2026 Governor Mandy Warfiled Granger, and Rotary International District 7620 Officers. I thank the Rotary Club of Rockville and all who presented gifts to me. I thank Rotary District 7620 Governor Mandy Granger for presenting the District Governor’s Citation to Ukpeme Akpan Okon. The Citation was awarded with deep appreciation in honor and recognition of Ukpeme Akpan Okon’s excellent leadership in Rotary Club of Rockville and Rotary Action Group for Peace Potomac Chapter.

I thank Rotary International District 7620, where I served as the Rotary District 7620 Peace Committee Chair for 3 Rotary Years: Rotary Year 2022-2023, Rotary Year 2023-2024, and Rotary Year 2024-2025.

I thank the Rotary Action Group for Peace, and members of the Rotary Action Group for Peace Potomac Chapter where I serve as the Founding Chair, for the opportunity to lead and for their supports. Rotary Club of Rockville is a Rotary Action Group for Peace Peacebuilder Club.

I thank the City of Rockville Mayor Monique Ashton, who was inducted into Rotary Club of Rockville as Honorary Member in Rotary Year 2025-2026, for her leadership and for her support. Mayor Monique Ashton was honored by Ukpeme Akpan Okon as her Hero for the Rotary Club of Rockville 2026 Flags for Heroes.
