Our Featured Speaker This Week is Ukpeme Akpan Okon, Presenting her Classification Talk.
Classification talks are a valued Rotary tradition in which members introduce their professional backgrounds, personal journeys, and the ways their vocations connect to their service in Rotary.
Ukpeme Akpan Okon, a Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow, is the President of the Rotary Club of Rockville, Maryland for Rotary Year 2025-2026. Rotary Club of Rockville is a Rotary Action Group for Peace Peacebuilder Club. Ukpeme is an Ambassador for Peace - the title was awarded by Universal Peace Federation. Ukpeme was inducted into the Rotary Club of Abuja in Nigeria on October 10, 2009 where she served as the Club Service Director (Rotary Year 2009-2010), and the Club Treasurer (Rotary Year 2010-2011 and Rotary Year 2011-2012). Ukpeme was inducted into the Rotary Club of Rockville on March 31, 2022. Ukpeme is a Lawyer and Principal of La Paix Solicitors. Ukpeme was Called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on October 12, 2004.
Ukpeme is a past Peace Committee Chair of Rotary International District 7620 (Rotary Years 2022-2025), a past Peace Committee Chair of Rotary Club of Rockville (Rotary Years 2022-2025), and the Founding Chair of Rotary Action Group for Peace Potomac Chapter. Ukpeme served as the National Vice President and also as the National Director – Administration of International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), USA Chapter. Among other things, Ukpeme is also a Mediator, Arbitrator, Educator, Peace Lecturer, musician known as UkpEmem, Human Rights Consultant, and Author of award-winning The Values String: A book on Transitional Life, Compelling Fulfillment, and Profound Peace.
Ukpeme - the Principal of The Values String, LLC is the Convener of The Peace Agenda - a platform for strategizing sustainable agenda and action for peace, as well as the organizer of The Peace Agenda Summit. She is a member of Women, Peace and Security Network, as well as other organizations. Ukpeme is the Founding Coordinator of Justice, Development and Peace Commission of the Catholic Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles Parish, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria and she has served as the Program Coordinator and the Executive Secretary of Mediators and Advocates of Peace (LAMPAIX), Abuja, Nigeria.
Ukpeme is the Founder of Guild of Adjudicators in Nigeria (GAIN) – a prime Alternative Dispute Resolution organization, and an organization with Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
Ukpeme wishes to contribute to society, Rotary International, and the legal profession to uplift the rule of law, to foster the awareness, promotion, protection and enforcement of human rights, as well as to promote Alternative Dispute Resolution, peace, development, and sustainability.
Ukpeme Akpan Okon is a multi-awardee and enjoys volunteering, music, dancing, nature, peace works, cooking, travelling, wellness, among others. Ukpeme is blessed and thankful for the Divine, her good family, friends, colleagues, well-wishers, and every existence in goodness.
