Voices for Children Montgomery Advocating for children in foster care in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Voices for Children Montgomery’s vision is to be the leading voice championing and advocating for every child in Montgomery County foster care. Our mission is to train and support volunteer advocates for children in Montgomery County foster care to ensure their placement in safe, permanent homes. This mission is accomplished through the recruitment, training and on-going support and supervision of volunteers from the community who are appointed by the Juvenile Court judges to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for these children. CASA Volunteers serve as voices for one of our most vulnerable populations – abused and neglected children.

On October 20, we are hosting Domestic Violence 101. Smita Varia will discuss the various forms of domestic violence, why survivors may stay in abusive relationships, the dangers of leaving, and how abuse can continue even after a survivor has left the home.

Anne Mutti has been working with 9-year-old Mary* for almost two years. Mary was removed from her mother’s home due to neglect and her mother’s mental health challenges. Mary’s permanency plan is adoption. Unfortunately, Mary experienced a series of adoptive home placements that were not appropriate for her and could not meet her needs.

When Mary moved back to a former foster parent’s home and returned to her previous elementary school, Anne spoke with Mary’s teacher and shared that Mary had previously participated in the Talented and Gifted Program. The following week, Mary reported that she was once again attending Talented and Gifted sessions and was happy to be back in the program.
