From Donna Edwards of AFL-CIO,

With President Biden’s official signature on the bipartisan bill, Infrastructure Week is finally here.

The passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is a monumental political and legislative accomplishment. This is a $1.2 trillion investment in our infrastructure after decades of decline, and America’s workers are ready to rebuild our country.

This is a tremendous victory for working people in America:
• $110 billion to rebuild 173,000 miles of roads and 45,000 bridges.
• $65 billion to expand broadband internet access, particularly in rural areas.
• $55 billion to make sure Americans have access to safe and clean water, including $15 billion to replace lead pipes.
There’s even more in the bill, and all of this investment will create good union jobs. And that is worth celebrating.

Working people didn’t vote for a return to normal; we voted for a better future. And we’re making progress.

We need to finish the job by also passing the Build Back Better Act. Will you add your name and call on Congress to pass it immediately?

In Solidarity,

Team AFL-CIO

A message from President Donna S. Edwards................

Today we observe Veterans Day, honoring the men and women who served in our nation’s armed forces. Veterans are more likely to work in a unionized workplace. Compared to a 12 percent coverage rate overall, 16 percent of veterans—or 1.2 million veterans (2017)—are in a union or covered by a union contract.
Unfortunately, a large number of veterans not in unionized worksites are working in low-wage jobs. In fact, 1 out of every 5 veterans would benefit from raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2024. In addition to raising the minimum wage, Congress should ensure that workers who have fought to preserve our freedoms return to workplaces where they have the freedom to join together to bargain for better wages and working conditions. Nearly 1 in 5 employed veterans, including 1 in 3 with a service-connected disability, work in the public sector. nOe third of federal civil servants are veterans,
The Union Veterans Council of the AFL-CIO is a vital part of building labor's support and programs for veterans. Contact https://unionveterans.org/ to discover how your union can support our veterans.

Veterans and working people are facing the same issues—a lack of good jobs, access to quality health care, and the need for racial and economic justice.

AFSCME’s Saunders: We will continue the fight ‘so that every American’s voice is heard in our democracy’
WASHINGTON — AFSCME President Lee Saunders released the following statement after the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act failed to advance in the U.S. Senate:

“The late John Lewis marched 50 miles from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, not once but twice, for the right to vote – nearly losing his life along the way. But a minority of senators won’t even vote to consider the bill that carries his name and honors his legacy, a bill that would restore the Voting Rights Act protections so many sacrificed so much for. We will continue the fight – getting in ‘good and necessary trouble’ – so that every American’s voice is heard in our democracy, no matter their race, background, economic status or zip code.”

Thank a union.
