When U.S. Army veteran SGM James McGruber was suddenly diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer that had impacted his spine and caused partial paralysis, his wife, Tammy, was right by his side.

During treatment at the Richmond VA, Fisher House became their home away from home, giving Tammy a place to stay close to James when being together mattered most.

For military and veteran families facing an unexpected medical crisis, having a place to rest, recharge, and simply be near the person they love can mean everything.

Sports brought Garrett and Joey Kuwada together more than 30 years ago. Years later, sports would become an important part of their journey again.

In 2016, Air Force veteran Garrett survived a ruptured brain aneurysm that changed life for their entire family. As he adjusted to life in a wheelchair, Joey encouraged him to try adaptive sports, a decision that led them to the Warrior Games, Invictus Games, and wheelchair basketball together.

Their journey also brought them to Fisher House Palo Alto while Garrett received care. There, Joey found more than a place to stay close, she found a community that understood.

“You become this unit because you can just look at somebody and you don't even have to say anything because you're all going through the same thing.”

Ken MacMillan first met Judy while recovering from injuries sustained during the Vietnam War. She was his nurse and despite Ken’s best efforts, she insisted on keeping things professional.

Two months after he left active duty, that changed. Fifty-five years later, Ken is still by Judy’s side, now supporting her through her own medical journey.

When Judy needed emergency care far from home, Fisher House gave Ken a place to stay close.

“I could walk to the hospital to visit my wife. I mean, I had the car, but I could walk over. That's how nice it was. It was a good feeling,” Ken said.

For a couple who has spent a lifetime caring for one another, Fisher House offered something simple but meaningful: a place where Ken could rest, recharge, and continue being there for Judy.

For Navy and Army veteran Suzanne Clark, service has always been part of her story. But years after taking off the uniform, she faced a new battle: Stage 3 breast cancer.

After discovering a lump following a routine mammogram in 2020, Suzanne began a journey through diagnosis, a double mastectomy, and additional surgery. Today, she is four years cancer-free.

Her story is one of strength, but also of the difference it makes to have people beside you.

“Through VA, you find your people,” Suzanne shared. “It’s an unbiased, supportive community that’s always there for you.”

At Fisher House Foundation, we know how powerful that support can be. Whether it comes from a care team, fellow veterans, or family waiting nearby, no one should have to face life’s hardest moments alone.

Suzanne now gives that support back by volunteering, mentoring, and advocating for other women veterans. Her journey is a beautiful reminder that healing can extend far beyond one person; it can become a source of hope for someone else.

Today, we pause to honor the service members who answered the call, the veterans who carry the experiences, and the families who stood by them through deployments, homecomings, and sacrifice.

A Fisher House is more than a place to stay. It’s a place to come home to. ❤️

Where the smell of coffee in the kitchen greets you before an early morning appointment, a quiet bedroom waits after a long day at the hospital, and where the smells of a home cooked meal can bring you out of that room into a community that knows what you're going through.

Most importantly, it’s being close to the person you love when they need you most.

Fisher Houses provide military and veteran families a home away from home, at no cost, while their loved ones receive care at nearby military and VA medical centers.

Because a family’s love is good medicine. ❤️
