Good morning! Ask yourself, how can i be like Roy today?

Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez charged into enemy fire in Vietnam, saving eight lives despite 37 wounds, in one of the most heroic acts of the war.

On May 2, 1968, near Loc Ninh, a 12-man Special Forces team—surrounded by an overwhelming North Vietnamese Army battalion of about 1,000 soldiers—radioed desperately for extraction. Benavidez, stationed nearby and not part of the mission, overheard the plea and volunteered without hesitation.

Armed only with a knife and a medical bag, he leaped from a hovering helicopter into the fray. Over the next six grueling hours, he endured 37 wounds from bullets, shrapnel, and bayonets while repeatedly exposing himself to withering fire. He dragged wounded teammates to safety, distributed ammunition, directed airstrikes, and even engaged in hand-to-hand combat, killing multiple enemies with his bare hands and an captured AK-47.

At one point, after being stabbed in the abdomen, he fought off his attacker and continued the rescue. Benavidez ultimately saved eight lives and recovered vital classified documents before collapsing. Medics, believing him dead, zipped him into a body bag—until he spat in a doctor's face to prove he was still alive.

After the war, Benavidez's valor was initially recognized with the Distinguished Service Cross, but it took over a decade for his story to fully emerge.

In 1981, President Ronald Reagan awarded him the Medal of Honor at the Pentagon, noting that if it were a movie script, no one would believe it.

Retiring from the Army in 1976 as a master sergeant, Benavidez settled in El Campo, Texas, with his family and devoted his remaining years to inspiring others. He became a tireless speaker, traveling to schools, military bases, and civic groups to emphasize the power of education and warn against bad influences. He advocated fiercely for veterans' rights, and also penned three autobiographical books.

Roy passed away in 1998.

Rest in Peace, Roy. You've earned it.
