PLEASE NOTE:
Since we will be having this important event this Sunday at 1:30 there will not be an afternoon walk.

Join us for the 2nd annual Skagit River Wonder event at the Skagit River Bald Eagle Interpretive Center in Rockport, WA on February 15th from 1pm to 2:30pm. We invite our community to once again gather for an open mic event to share poetry, stories, and musical performances around our appreciation of the Skagit River and its watershed (also open to all topics). This year this event will be a fundraiser for flood-impacted households in eastern Skagit County. This is a free event, but please donate what you can to support our community members. Everyone is welcome!

Presented by the Skagit River Poetry Foundation and the Skagit River Bald Eagle Interpretive Center.

Funds raised will go to the East County Flood Fund and benefit local flood-impacted households, in partnership with Community Action's East County Resource Center. Funds are being used by the East County Resource Center to provide resources such as propane, firewood, food, clothing and other basic needs.

If you are unable to attend the event or would rather donate online, please do so here: https://tinyurl.com/floodfundesc

Congratulations to our Seattle Seahawks who are Super Bowl bound! One of our favorite subjects here at the Interpretive Center is to talk about birds, especially raptors. We thought it would be fun and educational to spend this week presenting some facts about the Seattle Seahawks vs a “Sea Hawk”.
Today we will start out with Taima, the live mascot for the Seahawks. The photo of Taima below is from www.Seahawks.com.

Taima Facts:
He was hatched on April 21, 2005 and arrived in Spokane on June 13, 2005.
He came from the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis, Missouri.
His species is Augur Buzzard from Africa. In North America we associate buzzard with vultures but in Europe and Africa they are hawks.
His wingspan is approximately 4 to 5 ft and weighs about 2 to 3 pounds.
They have a lifespan of 10 to 25 years in the wild but can live up to 30 in captivity.

This first year Bald Eagle was about 50 feet from us at the Skagit River today during pur first walk. They stayed close to us the whole tome we were there. It was flying back and forth to a few branches before seeing a salmon in the side channel. It dove into the water and disappeared for about a minute and then reemerged swimming to the nearest branch on a sand bar. There were no other Eagles around so this one got to enjoy a salmon lunch solo.
