FlatsWorthy

FlatsWorthy FlatsWorthy is a coalition of Diverse Anglers practicing Mutual Respect when sharing the resource! Respect one another's right to the same resource. Namaste!

Our shallow saltwater flats provide a unique, world class fishing experience for poling skiffs, kayaks, wade fisherman and air boaters alike. The job of creating peace and harmony on the flats lands on us the fishermen. The only way to resolve conflict between recreational user groups of these inland waters is by treating each other the way we wish to be treated.

This Saturday, June 6th is Free Fishing Day! This is a great opportunity to intriduce someone to fishing and enjoy a day out on the water with friends and family, It is the perfect time to start teaching someone about conservation and how important the preservation of our bay systems is to water recreation.

As TPWD says, "On the first Saturday in June of each year, everyone can fish recreationally without licenses or endorsements. This opportunity exists so that more people can try fishing for the first time. If you already have your license, thank you for your support! Please consider inviting a friend or family member to join you."

This is incredibly similar to the challenges we have faced among the Texas Coast.

We not only strive to help uncover solutions, but also to bring awareness to this issue.

Whether you have supported the cause for years or are new to the conservation efforts, Seth Gambill does a great job explaining the repurcussions of wild oyster dredging.

While the world celebrated the Earth this week, we fight for it every day. Capt. Chuck Naiser and CPR founder John Eads discuss one of the ways the oysters are being protected, by the issuance of COLs. These Certificates of Lease provide lessees with the ability to property manage and solely harvest that portion of the bay bottom. They take bare, unused portions of the bay bottom and turn them into thriving ecosystems.

Farm raised oysters are as sustainable as they are delicious. Oyster farmers such as Big Tree Oyster Co. are working to build a sustainable future for oyster harvesting that preserves the natural structure wild oysters provide.

If you see farm raised oysters on the menu next time you're out, give them a try.

If you build it, they will come.

Putting materials into the water to create structure for baby oysters is a large step toward population growth.

We are excited to share our new video, The Crest, taking a closer look at why vertical relief in oyster reefs matters.

Healthy, elevated reefs serve as natural barriers, reducing erosion, absorbing wave energy, and protecting shorelines from storm impact.

When oysters are removed and reefs lose their structure, that protection disappears. Keeping oysters in the water is essential not just for shoreline stability, but for water quality, habitat, and the overall health of coastal ecosystems.

Understanding vertical relief means understanding what is at stake and why protecting these reefs has never been more important.

Special thanks to our filmmaker Nick Enriquez, Harte Research Institute, HDR, and Seth Gambil for helping bring this story to life.
