Authentic Casework loading...

In this two-week Workshop, everyone begins with a common set of dimensions and a basic cabinet concept. With the guidance of instructors Frank Strazza () and Timothy Coleman (), students adjust proportions, select joinery details, choose to incorporate doors or drawers, and gain a strong understanding of proportion, detail, and decision-making in furniture design.

Students in Authentic Casework are just finishing up their first week—can’t wait to share some of their final casepieces!

Timothy Coleman has been creating custom furniture in his rural Massachusetts workshop since 1989 following a year-long apprenticeship in Seattle and two years of study with James Krenov at the College of the Redwoods. Tim’s exquisitely detailed, sculptural furniture is exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the US. His most recent project with Fine Woodworking is a sixteen-part video series featuring the creation of one of his signature marquetry cabinets.

Frank Strazza is a traditional fine furniture maker with over 30 years’ experience, based in central Texas. He began woodworking at age 11 and after completing high school, Frank served a traditional apprenticeship and journeymanship, including studying with Paul Sellers for several years. He also participated in building furniture for the permanent collection at the White House and has won top awards in nationally recognized furniture shows across the country.

Well-tuned, sharp tools are foundational to good workmanship.

In The Unplugged Woodshop, John Cameron and Clark Kellogg teach students to make their own wooden handplanes that they use throughout the class, with a focus on technique and precision. Students then explore hollow-grinding and honing sharp edges, planing boards four-square, cutting mortise-and-tenon and dovetail joints, fairing curves, and more.

Now in week 2, each student is making a box, stool, or other small item with continued focus on hand tools, experiencing how slowing down can impact their woodowkring practice.
