Senate Study Committee on the Preservation of Georgia’s Farmlands to Hold Fourth Meeting

The Polk County College and Career Academy is set to host the State Senate’s fourth hearing on preserving Georgia’s farmlands.
The State Senate Committee headed by Sen. Billy Hickman (R-Statesboro) has held three previous meetings in Statesboro at Georgia Southern University and in Habersham County. Those meetings were held in July and August. The first was live streamed.
State Sen. Jason Anavitarte (R-Dallas) is among the members of the committee and represents Polk in the 31st District in the State Senate.

“During the upcoming meeting, committee members will hear presentations on the topics of the past, present, and future of Georgia’s agriculture industry, conservation efforts and agriculture protection policies,” the press release from the State Senate noted. “The Senate Study Committee on the Preservation of Georgia’s Farmlands is tasked with studying the conditions, needs, issues and problems related to the preservation of Georgia’s farmlands and recommending any action or legislation.”

The public is welcome to attend the meeting coming up on Monday, October 28 at 10 a.m.

Next Monday’s session will be livestreamed to the public.

Major Milestone Met by Friends of Ag!

Friends of Agriculture reached a major milestone by signing with Bell & Associates Architects on June 5, 2024 for the detailed design of the 60,000 square foot multipurpose Agriculture Education & Natural Resource Center planned for central Polk County on donated land on Sardis Road. The Center design, which incorporated community inputs, will include a cannery, offices, classrooms, a commercial kitchen plus an indoor arena for large gatherings and a covered arena designed for equestrian events. The goal is to improve health, nutrition and quality of life through education and activities to all Polk County citizens. Once built, according to a UGA Feasibility Study, it is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to Polk County.
The Center is being spearheaded by the grassroots non-profit Friends of Agriculture using donations from forward-thinking local individuals, organizations and businesses. They currently have raised over $1.3 million including 23 acres of donated land. God often remines me that he is always with me. Maybe not verbally, but mostly through the things I see. On Good Friday after noon, he sent me a swarm of bee and you can see what he was reminding me of.

If anyone is interested in serving on our Disaster Relief Team here is the website where you can register and see what areas, you may like to serve on. If you can walk and talk, there is a place for you. You don't have to be from Polk County to sign up. There are teams all around Georgia close to where you live, but you have to have the training to be called up during a disaster situation. The deadline to register is this Sunday, March 17, 2024. Training is March 22-23,2024.
