Celebrating Women’s History Month

Ms. Janie Holman
Janie Carithers Holman was born in Commerce, Georgia, the eldest of four daughters. She attended Spelman College in Atlanta, GA graduating at the age of 20, and had already begun her faithful career in education at the age of 19 at Warrenton High School in Warrenton, GA. She married Stanley Holman, a chemistry professor and moved to Orlando, Florida. Eventually, in 1959, she moved to Cocoa where Mrs. Holman catalyzed her teaching career in Brevard County at Monroe, the first historically Black high school in the county. Affectionately known as "Teach", Mrs. Holman taught first and second grade at Poinsett Elementary for six years. In 1966, she accepted a teaching position at Fairglen Elementary, the first Black educator of this school. In 1975, she was selected Brevard Public Schools (official) Teacher of the Year, the first Black to be honored as such. She taught at Fairglen for 27 years and was offered a position at Endeavor Elementary, where she remained until her retirement in 2000. Mrs. Holman was strongly committed for over 45 years to educating young minds to reach beyond their potential to unfathomable heights. Mrs.Holman will be remembered for her commitment in serving students to reach their goals and dreams.

Celebrating Women’s History Month

Today we proudly honor four phenomenal women who have dedicated their lives to educating, leading, and uplifting our community.

From left to right: Dr. Debbie Lyons, Ms. Jackie Feagin, Dr. Karen Ivery, and Ms. Katrina Hudson.

These incredible leaders have served as Principals with Brevard Public Schools and collectively bring over 100 years of educational experience and service to our children and families. Just think about that a century of pouring into students, mentoring teachers, guiding staff, and shaping the future of our community.

Their leadership is not just about titles it’s about impact. It’s about the lives changed, the standards raised, the barriers broken, and the doors opened for generations to come. They have led with grace, strength, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Because of women like them:
📚 Schools are stronger.
🌟 Students believe in themselves.
👩🏾‍🏫 Educators are inspired.
💪 Communities are empowered.

During this Women’s History Month, we celebrate not only their accomplishments, but their resilience, wisdom, and the legacy they continue to build every single day.

Thank you, ladies, for your leadership, your sacrifice, and your extraordinary service. You are appreciated more than words can express. 💐
