As communities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continue to face the threat of Ebola, Medicines for Humanity is working alongside in-country partners to help health facilities and communities prepare and respond.
With emergency funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Fund for Sisters, MFH is supporting five Congregations of Catholic Sisters operating 10 health facilities across North and South Kivu. Over six months, the project is expected to reach more than 262,000 people by providing critical medicines and supplies for Ebola prevention and treatment, supporting community education and contact tracing, and strengthening the capacity of local health care workers to respond effectively to the outbreak.
This work is already making an impact. So far, 267 Community Health Workers (CHWs) and 422 health facility staff have been trained in Ebola prevention, detection, and response. At all 10 health facilities, patients are screened for symptoms and potential Ebola exposure, with suspected cases immediately separated and referred for testing. CHWs are also educating their communities about prevention, early warning signs, and when to seek care.
To date, all suspected cases identified and tested at MFH-supported facilities have been negative. Throughout the response, all 10 facilities have also continued providing essential maternity, outpatient, inpatient, and other routine health services.
