Under normal circumstances, we would be looking forward to seeing each other at June’s First Friday Art Walk. However, in light of the current situation, Arts In Rockland continues to postpone the start of our Art Walk season. We are monitoring the ever-changing situation, and look forward to resuming as soon as it is safe and responsible to do so.

Meanwhile, many of our member galleries are now open, or re-opening, with provisions in place in line with government guidelines to make their work available to our supporters once again.

We hope to see you for an Art Walk before too long, and will announce the delayed commencement of season when the time comes. In the meantime, we wish our friends near and far, a healthy and happy start to the summer.

There will be an opening art reception for three Maine artists who are sharing their experiences of the natural world through a variety of art media on Friday, May 4th from 5-8 p.m. at the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center and Art Gallery.

Lynn Travis of Lincolnville is an accomplished artist with works reflecting our interactions with the natural world. “I paint and draw what I love – the natural world,” says Travis. She hopes her paintings prompt viewers to consider their own relationship to these subjects. Are we considerate to each other and to the land that sustains us? Are we good stewards of the environment?”

Gwen Sylvester of Rockland returns with a special show for this gallery featuring art on endangered plants and animals in Maine. Sylvester plans to add more pieces over the length of the exhibit (May through July) to represent as many endangered species as possible. She hopes that the paintings inspire caring and win hearts to the cause of preservation and protection of habitats and mindfulness of daily choices that affect the many forms of life in the State of Maine and the planet.

Sherrie York, printmaker, recently relocated to Pemaquid, Maine from her native Colorado. York shares linocut images of birds and their watery habitat, from the ubiquitous mallard to the superstar puffin in her exhibit of “Water Wings.” Through the medium of linocut, Sherrie finds her way to place, inspired by personal experiences and discoveries as she explores the natural world from mountains to the sea.

The visitor center and art gallery are located at 9 Water Street in Rockland. For more information, call 594-0600 x5.

There will be an opening art reception for three local artists who are sharing their experiences with the natural world through a variety of art media on Friday, September 1st from 5-8 p.m. at the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center and Art Gallery.

Gordon Bok of Camden is both an accomplished songwriter and woodcarver (Lay Out Your Anchor, below). He began relief carving when he inherited his mother’s carving tools. Gordon’s art reflects his attraction to boats and people; he has done many carvings about the fisheries that are all around us. Like his music, these carvings are a way to enter more deeply into his world.

Lois Anne, poet and artist has maintained a studio in Rockland since the early 80’s working with a variety of media (Swimming with the Tide, below). Art for Lois is an interpretation of experience. She sees her visual work primarily as visual poems about states of perception and feeling. She will share her paintings and mixed media that reflect aspects of our natural world.

Julie Cyr of Belfast just received People’s Choice in the Maine Coastal Islands Juried Art Show for her red fox oil on wood. Julie finds her inspiration in the wonder of daily life. She paints the landscapes, barns and wildlife that she experiences daily along mid-coast Maine (The Point, below).

The visitor center and art gallery are located at 9 Water Street in Rockland. The visitor center also is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 594-0600 x5.
