April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

Keeping children safe is a year-round task and April is simply the month we take to remember those involved and re-focus our attention on the issue. Such an important mission with such a complex and diverse causation requires the work of all of us in the community.

To report suspected child abuse and/or neglect call the DHHS Child Protective Intake at 1-800-452-1999, if you are deaf or have difficulty hearing call 711 (Maine Relay). The Office of Child and Family Services line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including on holidays.

As always, in case of an emergency or for immediate assistance call 9-1-1.

Winter coats and car seats don't mix! As a general rule, winter coats should not be worn underneath a car seat harness because that can leave the harness too loose to be effective in a crash.

It is so important to be properly buckled. Car seats DO NOT WORK when not properly used.

Winter Coat = NO!!!

Children should NEVER be buckled in a car seat with a heavy winter jacket!

It's one mistake parents make frequently in the winter. And it can be a deadly one.
