Sail, Power and Steam Museum

Sail, Power and Steam Museum Our Mission: To celebrate, honor, experience, and share the story of Maine's maritime heritage. The Museum is open May - October each year.

Our mission is to celebrate, honor, experience, and share the story of Maine's maritime heritage. During our off season, we may open by appointment for tours or event rentals, and we are open every Sunday for our Sunday Music Jam sessions! The Museum is home to the Midcoast Sailing Center and its signature program, SKFF (Sail Kids For Free), a FREE Youth sailing Program. Our goal at the center is

to "democratize sailing," ensuring that area youth (aged 7-14) have access to learning the art and science of sailing, regardless of their ability to pay.

Fascinating!

Thank you, Rockland Historical Society for sharing this gem!

There’s something truly magical about Adventure. 🌊

This 99-year-old schooner doesn’t just sail — she connects people.
Longtime volunteers and first-time visitors, families and students — all finding inspiration in her history and beauty.

As we close Adventure’s 99th season and look ahead to her 100th year, we’re reflecting on the incredible community that keeps her sailing strong-YOU!

What a little beauty! This lovely Jimmy Steele peapod arrived at the museum yesterday, donated by museum supporter, Wayne Hamilton of Hamilton Marine. Can't wait to dip her oars this spring, and we look forward to adding her to our fleet, helping us give people the opportunity to experience some of our classic vessels and Maine's maritime heritage!

Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine published a story on the peapods back in 2021, stating, "Peapods originally were built on islands in Maine’s Penobscot Bay during the 1800s for lobster fishing. Their shallow draft and easy maneuverability allowed them to travel in rocky inshore waters where larger boats could not go. With two ends (visually suggesting a peapod), they were easily rowed in both directions, and lobstermen commonly rowed them while standing."

Steel himself started his career as a well-respected builder, but with encouragement from Capt. Havilah Hawkins, began building the peapods that bear his name. Over the course of 42 years, he build 178 peapods.

The museum is open until October 31, so there is still time to come see her!

It's not even November, but we're already getting ready for spring!

These three awesome vessels had a busy summer, chartering and teaching people to sail and they've just been hauled for the winter..

We're super excited to have our Friendship sloop, Persistence, inside for the winter. We didn't have much time for her prep this spring, so we're looking forward to getting her "prettied up" for 2026! We're still looking for lead for ballast replacement, and hoping Santa Claus has room on his sleigh this year (sorry, Rudolf ... we know it's heavy). If you have any to donate to help lighten Rudolf's load (no matter how small an amount), we'd certainly appreciate it!

Jocky had fun taking cruise ship passengers out to the Breakwater Lighthouse last month, and we're hoping to offer that to the general public next year.

Skimmer, a pretty little Herreshoff 12-1/2 was used for lessons and charters this summer. Looking forward to introducing more people to gaff rigged sailing next year.
