You and your family are invited to join us in Bethel on Sunday, August 30th for a bug walk in partnership with Queerly ME! 🦋 Learn about Maine's native bugs, plants, and the ecosystem, and create your own bug mask to take home and/or wear for the Monarch Festival parade. What will you work on at OMGLOL (OUT Maine Goes Live on the Lake) September 18th-20th? 📣 Each group of participants will be following their own quest line themed around a relevant social issue. Through collaborative problem solving and a little bit of imagination, you'll come up with a group project to tie your quest together in the end and become the heroes of your own stories. Past projects have included hand-drawn flyers spreading news, plans for organizing community events, and persuasive letters or scripts drafted to in-world decision makers. All of these projects are directly translatable to things you can do in real life right now to advocate within your community! The final OUT in the Park event of the summer is coming up on Sunday, August 30th! 🦋 We're partnering with our friends at Queerly ME for an afternoon of learning about bugs, plants, and the ecosystem in Bethel, all leading up to the Monarch Festival. After a session learning from a local expert, join us in making bug masks to rock for the monarch parade! Craft supplies for making bug masks will be provided. Where fantasy meets social justice! 🎲🌈 OUT Maine Goes Live on the Lake (OMGLOL) 2026 will be following a similar structure introduced at last year's leadership retreat: you'll be working in groups on Dungeons & Dragons-style quest lines themed around a social issue of your choice. Here's an example from our last retreat: one group explored issues related to educating communities on the civil rights of marginalized identities that live there. Setting these issues within a fantasy context, where druids and other magic-users need to know their rights, allows youth to think through otherwise-difficult topics that are relevant to their own communities and then bring back their lessons learned to be used in real life.
