Join us as celebrate the start of SEED, a summer series of participatory art experiences inspired by and interacting with the St. George River.

The first SEED event will be an opening reception at the Langlais Art Preserve in Cushing, in the historic workshop of Bernard Langlais, on Friday, June 26 from 4pm-6pm.

The opening reception will include:
🦋 a family-friendly butterfly wing making art activity
🌀 a presentation on native riparian plants
🦋 a special poetry reading by Cushing Community School 4th grader Eleanor Stenger (whose letter to the St. George River is one of 60+ notes from students incorporated in Farley’s sculptures)
🌀 a brief talk by the artist
🦋 light refreshments

This event is free and open to all ages. RSVP and see the full schedule of SEED events at georgesriver.org/events (🔗visit the link in our bio).

🌀🦋🌀🦋🌀

SEED is a multi-site art project by Cushing-based artist and Maine Visual Arts Fellow Lihua Lei Farley, which invites the community to draw closer to the St. George River and respark childlike wonder. Farley and Georges River Land Trust hope SEED will inspire participants to see themselves as part of the river’s living system—and to care more deeply for its future.

Wonder Walks return this Friday, June 12! 🎨🌷

Every Friday morning this summer, from 9am-10am, Wonder Walks will take place at the Langlais Art Preserve in Cushing. Wonder Walks are child-centered meanders through the preserve, offering new discoveries as the landscape shifts. Children are provided a backpack to borrow during the program, filled with tools to further their exploration and aid their discoveries.

These programs are free and offered for children ages 0-5 (& a caretaker). No registration is needed, but you can let us know you’re coming and learn more at georgesriver.org/youth-programs 🌻🖼️

Join us any and every Friday morning from June 12-September 4!

🚨🥾 New trailhead alert!

A few weeks ago, we celebrated our new trailhead at the Rockland Bog Preserve off Beechwood St. in Thomaston. From this trailhead, hikers and bikers can access a combination of old logging roads, newly constructed woodland trails, and connected pathways to Jack Baker Woods Preserve, the Thomaston Town Forest, and the Rockland Bog trails at Route 90.

The Rockland Bog is a unique and special ecosystem, surrounded by forests. Georges River Land Trust now owns over 600 acres of the Rockland Bog, protecting this beautiful place for wildlife habitat, recreation, and public access.

We are so excited to create more access to these trails, which have been used by mountain bikers, cross-country skiiers, birders, and hikers for years.

We are thankful to work with as well as the City of Rockland, the Town of Thomaston, and private land owners to maintain and create trails in the bog.

Visit georgesriver.org to learn more and plan your visit to the Rockland Bog Preserve. 🐛🌲🦆☀️

Caught on trail cam! 🐾

This beautiful bobcat was out for a sunshiney stroll on conserved land in the St. George River watershed. We love seeing wildlife thriving on our preserves.

Spotted yesterday at Jack Baker Woods Preserve in Thomaston: the lady’s slippers are out!

These wild orchids need special habitats to grow and require the presence of fungus and nutrients to successfully bloom.

Maine is home to four species of lady’s slippers — all of which are vulnerable and should be admired, not collected.

We hope you get a chance to glimpse the lady’s slippers this year during a walk in the woods! 🌸

Our favorite sign that summer is coming? The dock at Quigg Island Preserve is IN! 🛶🌲

Quigg Island, located on Stevens Pond in Liberty, is an idyllic spot offering a one-mile loop trail through woods rich with ferns, mosses, and fungi. From the island’s shores, watch kingfishers and eagles forage for fish or listen to the loons’ calls.

A public boat launch and parking lot are available on Rte 173. We hope to see your boat on the island’s shores or at the dock soon!

This trail is student powered! 💪🏼🪚🌲

Earlier this week, our Trails and Stewardship staff were joined by 10th grade students from Camden Hills Regional High School at Appleton Preserve!

As part of the school’s “Give Back Day,” 10th graders participated in service projects throughout the five towns in the district — including Appleton.

Students cleared the trail corridor and helped remove invasive species to liberate and restore native plants. Thanks to these awesome students for their hard work keeping the trail passable and the preserve thriving!

A little rain can’t keep us out of the woods! We had a blast at our Vernal Pool Party in the Rockland Bog, getting an up-close look at egg masses, tadpoles, and a red-backed salamander. 🌲🐸

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a fun (and wet!) morning in the woods. Thank you especially to Maine Master Naturalist Ama Labelle for lending her knowledge and helping us get to know our amphibian friends better.

Supporting Georges River Land Trust makes free community events like this - and protecting ecologically special places like the Rockland Bog - possible! Visit georgesriver.org (🔗or check out the link in our bio) to learn more.
