4-H Embryology is a 21-day program where fertilized chicken eggs are incubated and hatched, in Richmond County 2nd grade classrooms. The 4-H embryology curriculum, incubator, and training materials are furnished by Richmond County 4-H, also through sponsorship from United Way of Richmond County and Richmond County Farm Bureau. This program takes a “hands-on” learning approach by incubating chicken eggs for 21 days, while students learn about life cycles and caring for animals. We are very excited to have this opportunity to expand the knowledge of agriculture, the life cycle and more to students of Richmond County.

With Spring, comes the sounds of chicks chirping through the Extension office. Several Richmond County 4-H'ers, like Lettie pictured here, are participating in the Regional Chicken Project, where they will raise chicks until a show date under the supervision of a parent/guardian and with help from Extension Agent, Anthony Growe. Participants are responsible for their chicks including record book keeping, feeding, and housing, while learning about care and their life cycle. The Poultry Show will be held on May 11th at the Hamlet Fairgrounds and open to the public for spectating.

💙 Partnership in Action! 💙

We love seeing our partner agencies working together to better our community. A huge thank you to Richmond County 4-H for teaming up with our BackPack Pals program to help pack food bags for local students in need.

Because of partnerships like this, children across Richmond County have access to nutritious food over the weekend—and that makes a real difference. 👏🍎

Together, we are building a stronger, more caring community.

Several Richmond County 4-H'ers, leaders, and families volunteered with BackPack Pals last fall; both agencies receive support from United Way of Richmond County - what a great way to have agencies helping other agencies! Thanks to all that volunteered!

Back in March, 4-H youth across the county received chicks as part of the Sandhills Regional Chicken Project. Since then, they've worked hard to keep their birds happy and healthy. In May, they proudly showcased their chickens at the annual Chicken Show. Now, five months later, their dedication is paying off — the hens are starting to lay eggs!
