Struggle does not always look the way we expect it to.

Someone can show up to work, answer messages, take care of their family, laugh with friends, and still be carrying something incredibly heavy.

Being productive does not mean someone is okay.

That is why we should be careful about deciding who “looks” like they need support.

Make room for honest conversations before someone reaches a breaking point. We never fully know what another person is carrying.

When you check on someone, the first answer may be, “I’m fine.”

Sometimes they are. Sometimes they are not ready to say more yet.

You do not have to pressure them or force a conversation. Just make it clear that your question was genuine.

Try something simple like, “I really mean it. How are you doing?”

That second moment of care can remind someone that they do not have to give the automatic answer.

Support often begins by creating enough space for honesty.

Some days take more out of us than others.

You can be grateful and still feel overwhelmed. You can care about the people around you and still need space. You can keep moving forward without pretending everything feels okay.

Honesty does not make a hard day heavier. Sometimes it is what helps make it manageable.

At Shatter Our Silence, we want people to feel safe saying when life feels difficult. You should not have to hide your struggle just to make everyone else comfortable.

You do not need a special reason to reach out. Think about someone you have not talked to in a while and send them a message. Ask how they are really doing. Let them know you were thinking about them. You may not know what someone is carrying behind the scenes, and a simple check-in can open the door to a conversation they needed. Building a more supportive community starts with small moments of connection. We can all help make it easier for people to speak up by showing them that someone is willing to listen.
