Well before I left to go on home visits our family was surprised by a presentation from three of our older students who help us while we are here.
It is very safe to say that our personal recognition is not our goal but to is also safe to say that it was an emotional moment for our family.
Our children and their families are very grateful. Unlike us, they persevere and struggle daily for things we take for granted. Many of those things are never reached, yet you are greeted with a smile, a hug, and always a kind word.
I am inspired by their fortitude and their generosity. I can’t tell you how many times we have been warmly welcomed into a home nor tell you how many times we have been given bags of fruit, a welcome chair in the shade, or a very warm hug, or having a family member walk to the local store and bring back ice and a cold drink.
It reminds me of the woman in the Bible giving the small coin in Mark 12, 41-44. There is extreme poverty here yet they give back to you what they have. It certainly changes your frame of mind.
Here, Anllelo is speaking about us. While he looks like he is reading it. He is actually looking a a certificate which each of us received from the school.
Anllelo is one student who for a while came sporadically to the school. Several years ago something clicked between him and me and he has increased his participation. I always say that when we come to Consuelo he is the first student we see. From then on he is my helper in virtually everything.
