WEEDING at 6:30 THURSDAY, June 18: We’re back to our Thursday-night w**ding schedule this week.

Though there’s a chance of rain that night, storms aren’t in the forecast this Thursday. So we’ll be out there — enjoying any chance Mother Nature gives us to yank out w**ds a little easier.

🕠 We’re starting at 6:30 and working until sunset.
📍We’re meeting on the patio of The GOAT to sign in, get safety vests and assignments.
➡️ Our focus this week is the medians north and south of the roundabout on North Main Street.
🍻 The first round when we’re done is on us (project co-chairs Ernie and Helen).

6/15 UPDATE: Eight have been adopted. Two are left.

An extension of our beautification of Veterans Memorial Circle is organizing and supporting adoption of the two dozen sidewalk plots on the Auburn Street approach to the roundabout from the east.

10 of these plots are still available; see the locations below.
NOTE: This year, the two beds closest to the circle are available.

Here is what adopting one of these beds means:
🌱 You buy and plant all the flowers.
🌱 At least three-quarters of the bed must be planted. Each plot is 12 by 4 feet.
🌱 You can be as creative as you want in the design and the choice of flowers.
🌱 No commercial or political signs and ornaments are permitted.
🌱 Mulch is provided.
🌱 You do the w**ding.
🌱 We do the watering.
🌱 At the end of the summer, adopters of beds judged to be the prettiest will get gift cards to neighborhood restaurants and shops.

Before you start:
• Let us know the bed you want to adopt.
• Arrange to meet us there to sign a volunteer form (required by the city) and to get a safety vest.

A comment from our original post of this:

“Two of my uncles from Rockford went into France with the second wave. They made it through the landing alive and proceeded to walk across France. They were in an Infantry unit and freed one village at a time as they walked. Villagers welcomed them with great celebrations.”

👏👏👏 3 CHEERS for Linda Corwin-Graber

Linda, our sole volunteer tonight, put in a lot of work with us at the SW monument wall, where work wasn’t quite done.

Linda w**ded for more than an hour, then helped plant, and also mulched.

The spouse of a Vietnam War veteran, Linda is one of our frequent Thursday night volunteers and also was a huge help on our planting day with the crew that popped out thousands of plants.

🌸🌸 For help with wrapping up work at monument walls, big thanks too to Teresa Hill, who on her own time this week finished planting a corner of the NW wall.

ℹ️ Our 6:30 p.m. Thursday w**ding get-togethers will continue through the summer. If that time isn’t convenient, you can still help. Let us know, as Teresa did, and we can make arrangements.

05/25/2026

The red poppies we planted this year in the long bed on Auburn Street near Greenwood Cemetery were inspired by Lt. Col. John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields.” That poem propelled the poppy as the international symbol of remembrance.

McCrae was a Canadian military doctor in World War I, who in the absence of a chaplain, wrote the poem in the back of an ambulance on his way to conduct the burial service for a fallen soldier.

McCrae had noticed red poppies growing among the fresh graves. His poem captures the grief, sacrifice, and horror of trench warfare while also urging the living to continue the fight.

Along the mural across from where we planted poppies which have yet to bloom, painted poppies remind us of these hard truths year-round.

On this Memorial Day, we reflect on all the lives sacrificed to protect our freedom. And we pray the work we do here to keep this space worthy of their memory brings some comfort to Gold Star families.

“In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

“We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

“Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.”

— John McCrae

The second annual Pasta for Plants dinner that Plume graciously hosted for us Thursday night was more than a fundraiser.

It was an evening of moments that deepened the relationships this project has forged. We wish we could have paused to take more photos of all the excitement!

People didn’t just attend. They arrived with great pride.

The constant flow of dinner guests all evening, both inside the restaurant and on the patio (where we fired up the heaters), will help us cover many of the remaining expenses for this year’s flowers—and give us a running start toward related expenses for supplies and equipment upkeep.

We wholeheartedly thank everyone who took time to join us for this event.

🙏🏼 🙏🏼 For the exceptional food, drinks and hospitality—and 100% of the proceeds from the dinner special—we thank Lia Pennacchi and Chase Williams of Plume.
🙏🏼 For the remarkable playlist (and redirection of all tips to our cause), we thank Pat Liddell.

People showed up for the planning and setup, too, giving of their talents, their know-how, their creativity, and their energy.

🙏🏼 For help days and hours before, we thank Cyndie Hall, Julie Huber, Holli Connell, Bader Ghareeb, Ismael Ghareeb, Frank Wedig and Jeanne Gropp-Wedig.

The 14 gift baskets that drew lots of attention also gave our project a boost. Congratulations to the lucky winners, three of whom are pictured here.

🙏🏼 For donations to the gift baskets, we thank Rob Ziewacz, Theresa Sinks, Kevin Ballard and John Wessel, Kegel’s Bicycle Store, The GOAT, Mulligan’s, The Norwegian, The Olympic Tavern, Possessions, Rooted, and Winnie Nutter.
🙏🏼 And for a small and local source of bits and bobs to pull gift baskets together, we thank The Scrap Jar.

The flags you see at the center of Veterans Memorial Circle this Memorial Day weekend are part of a donation by one of our setup volunteers.

We are grateful for so much!
