We're encouraging a small but meaningful change in language: instead of saying “committed su***de,” say “died by su***de.”

This isn't about policing people's words or criticizing anyone for using a phrase they've heard their entire lives. It's about recognizing how language shapes our conversations and choosing words that lead with compassion instead of judgment.

Changing our language won't take away the pain of loss, but it can help reduce stigma and create space for more open, compassionate conversations about mental health.

Language matters. Compassion matters. Every life matters.

Suicides are out of control. If you know someone struggling talk to them you may just save a life. You don’t need to be a professional therapist just a person with a good heart and is willing to listen.

Tuesday afternoon, a person jumped off the top of the Chapter apartment building on UW-Madison’s campus in an apparent su***de.

Most news outlets don’t report on su***des out of fear of copy cat incidents.

I think that’s a mistake.

So many people feel alone — especially now. I would like to use this platform to reassure you: you are not alone and, no matter how bad things may seem right now, they WILL get better.
