Meet Yani: Dental Assistant

For over a year and a half, Yani has been a dedicated Dental Assistant with Rockford’s mobile dental unit—a program that has been serving the community for 20 years. Visiting 45 schools across the city, the unit brings essential dental care directly to students, ensuring that every child has access to preventive services and oral health education.

“I absolutely love what I do—it’s my passion!” Yani shares. “There’s nothing more rewarding than helping children understand the importance of dental health. Seeing their smiles when they feel at ease with us brightens my day. I take pride in making dentistry a positive experience rather than something to fear.”

Through her work, Yani helps create a safe, welcoming environment for children, transforming what can sometimes be a stressful experience into one of comfort and learning. Her dedication reflects the mission of the mobile dental unit: to make oral health accessible, educational, and stress-free for every student it serves.

With Yani and the team visiting schools throughout Rockford, countless children leave with brighter smiles and a stronger understanding of how to care for their teeth—one visit at a time.

More than 20 years ago, Dr. Oates saw a need and took action, helping create what would become 205 DDS. What began as a mission to bring dental care directly to students has grown into a program that serves thousands of children each year, ensuring they receive the care they need to smile, learn, and thrive.

But those who know Cyrus know his impact goes far beyond dentistry. He is a mentor, a leader, a problem solver, and someone who never stops asking how he can help others. His passion for serving children and families has inspired an entire team, strengthened our community, and changed countless lives for the better.

Summer break is here, but caring for your child’s smile doesn’t have to stop when school is out. ☀️🦷

To help make summer dental care easier for RPS 205 families, 205 DDS has created a dedicated Summer Appointments page on our website with everything parents and guardians need to schedule care for their student during the summer months.

During the school year, students are transported through Rockford Public Schools for appointments. Once summer begins, transportation is no longer available, so parents and guardians will need to bring students directly to 205 DDS for their visits.

Summer appointments are available and encouraged so students can continue receiving important restorative dental care before returning to school in the fall feeling healthy, comfortable, and confident.

Every year, our team provides thousands of screenings, cleanings, sealants, and restorative treatments for students throughout Rockford Public Schools. For many children, this is the first time they’ve ever received consistent dental care.

As 205 DDS continues to grow, so does another important part of the mission: helping build the next generation of community-focused dental professionals.

Every year, more than 12,000 Rockford students are screened through our Mobile Dental Unit, with nearly half requiring additional restorative care. The need for accessible dental services continues to rise, and programs like 205 DDS cannot succeed without passionate professionals willing to serve where they are needed most.

That’s why 205 DDS is actively working to create academic partnerships with dental and dental hygiene programs.

Through these partnerships, students can gain real-world clinical experience in a supportive, mission-driven environment while working directly with underserved pediatric populations. Opportunities may include clinical rotations, externships, shadowing, service-learning placements, and faculty-led visits.

Unlike many traditional settings, students at 205 DDS experience community-based dentistry firsthand. They see the direct impact their work has on children who may not otherwise receive treatment, all while developing confidence and hands-on skills in preventative and restorative care.

This is about more than workforce development. It’s about creating a pipeline of compassionate providers who understand the importance of accessible healthcare and community impact.

For over 20 years, the Mobile Dental Unit and 205 DDS have worked to remove barriers for children in Rockford. Now, we hope to help inspire and prepare future dental professionals to carry that mission forward for the next generation.

School may be letting out for the summer, but dental care for our RPS 205 students doesn’t stop.

During the school year, transportation is provided for students to receive care through 205 DDS. Once summer begins, that transportation is no longer available, so parents and guardians will need to bring students to their appointments directly at our clinic, located in The QUAD off of Samuelson road.

The good news is that summer appointments are available and encouraged so students can continue receiving the restorative dental care they need before heading back to school this fall.

A lot of people see the Mobile Dental Unit or hear about 205 DDS and assume they’re separate programs. In reality, they are two parts of the same mission: making sure kids in Rockford can access dental care, regardless of income, transportation, or circumstance.

For more than 20 years, the Mobile Dental Unit has traveled directly to Rockford Public Schools, turning gyms, libraries, cafeterias, and classrooms into temporary dental clinics. Every year, the team provides screenings, cleanings, sealants, and preventative care to approximately 12,000 students across all 45 RPS 205 schools.

But during those visits, another reality became impossible to ignore: nearly half of the students screened needed additional restorative care like fillings, crowns, or extractions.

That’s why 205 DDS was created.

205 DDS is the nonprofit restorative clinic that works hand-in-hand with the Mobile Dental Unit and Rockford Public Schools District 205. When students are identified as needing follow-up care, they can be transported during the school day to 205 DDS, receive treatment, and return back to class the very same day.

This model removes some of the biggest barriers families face:
• Transportation
• Missed work for parents
• Limited access to Medicaid providers
• Long wait times
• Delayed treatment

What started as a preventative care program evolved into a complete care pipeline designed specifically for the children of Rockford.

This work only happens because of the partnership between dedicated dental professionals, RPS 205, community supporters, and people who believe every child deserves access to care.

And after more than two decades, we’re still growing, still learning, and still hoping this model inspires other communities to rethink what accessible healthcare can look like.
