Wildcats Race Day Recap 🐾🥇
After months of practice, the Wildcats took to the course this weekend and demonstrated what hard work, determination, and perseverance can accomplish.
Race day is always special, not because of the finish times or medals, but because it provides an opportunity to watch young Wildcats put months of effort into action.
For coaches, some of the most meaningful moments happen before the race even begins. It is answering questions from older Wildcats who have spent weeks thinking about goals and race strategies. It is reassuring younger Wildcats who may be feeling nervous about the unknown and reminding them that there are no expectations beyond showing up, trying their best, and having fun. Then comes the privilege of watching them discover what those lessons mean for themselves.
One of the most rewarding moments of race day comes near the finish line. Wildcats who may have been struggling only moments earlier can often be seen smiling as they sprint toward the finish. The expression on their faces tells a story better than any race result ever could. The feeling of “this is hard” transforms into “I did it.”
The conversations after the race may be the best part. Some Wildcats proudly share that they improved their time from last year. Others are excited simply because they finished a race they were not sure they could complete. Many eagerly show off the medals around their necks. Even though every Wildcat receives a medal, to them it isn’t just a medal. It’s THEIR medal. It represents the work they put in, the challenges they overcame, and what they accomplished.
For coaches, these moments are difficult to put into words. There is something remarkable about watching a Wildcat realize they are capable of more than they believed. There is something special about seeing a child take pride in their own effort, especially when that pride comes not from winning, but from trying. Watching a Wildcat go from uncertainty to confidence, from doubt to accomplishment, is one of the greatest rewards of coaching.
Perhaps the most important lesson from race day is that growth often happens slowly and in small increments. It can be difficult to see from one practice to the next. Then a day like today arrives, and Wildcats see the progress for themselves. They learn that effort matters, showing up matters, and that they can do hard things.
Congratulations to all of our Wildcats on a fantastic race day. We are proud of each and every one of you. Your hard work showed, your determination inspired us, and your smiles at the finish line reminded us why we do what we do. They reminded us of the value of running, teamwork, and community, and that HOPE still exists when people come together to encourage one another, support one another, and celebrate each other’s successes.
Way to go, Wildcats! 🐾
