We will continue to highlight the stories and experiences of local building trade apprentices in 2025, and we want to begin this year with a local apprentice who has earned national recognition.

After high school, Seth worked at the Belvidere Chrysler plant for several years, but, as we all know, everyone was eventually laid off, and the plant closed. Seth wanted to start a family and gain financial stability and was looking for options. That's when a friend in the trades told him about union building trade careers and apprenticeships.

He applied and eventually was accepted into the Sprinkler Fitters Five-Year Apprenticeship Program, which allowed him to earn a good living right away while pursuing a tuition-free, debt-free education that heavily emphasizes hands-on learning, his preferred learning style.

When asked if he would recommend the building trades to friends or others, Seth emphatically stated "Yes" and noted that "this trade has improved my livelihood in many ways," including excellent wages, benefits, and opportunities to prove your craftsmanship. And prove himself he did! In 2024, Seth took home the National Apprenticeship Award for Sprinkler Fitting.

We are proud that a local tradesperson took home this prestigious award and wish Seth all the best in the remainder of his apprenticeship and his career. Congratulations to Seth, and thank you for sharing your story with PFR and our community!
