π¨ **NEW ILLINOIS E-BIKE & MICROMOBILITY LAWS TAKE EFFECT JANUARY 1, 2027!** π²
The Island Lake Police Department wants to ensure residents know about upcoming changes to Illinois laws governing electric bicycles, electric scooters, motor-driven cycles, low-speed gas bicycles, and children's battery-powered toy vehicles.
As these devices become more popular, riders and parents should understand the new requirements before heading out on the road.
**What's changing?**
β
New minimum age requirements for certain devices.
β
Updated speed limits, device classifications, and equipment requirements.
β
Restrictions on where each type of device may legally operate.
β
Passenger restrictions, particularly for riders under 18.
β
Licensing, registration, and insurance requirements for certain higher-powered devices.
β οΈ **PARENTS: Not all electric bikes are legally considered bicycles!** Some higher-powered models fall under the motor-driven cycle classification and are subject to additional requirements.
We've attached an informational graphic to help residents understand the different classifications and where each device is permitted to operate.
We encourage everyone to review these changes, especially before purchasing an e-bike, scooter, or similar device for a child.
Our goal is education, responsible riding, and keeping Island Lake's roads, sidewalks, and recreational paths safe for everyone.
**Know your device. Know the rules. Ride safely!**
