The Rockford Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the Chicago Police Department and the family, friends, and loved ones of the officer who was tragically shot and killed in the line of duty. This heartbreaking loss is a solemn reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face each day in service to their communities.

Ida Patterson was one of Rockford’s first Policewomen. A Rockford native born in 1874, she graduated from Rockford High School in 1893. She then spent 25 years as a teacher, and then principal at Rockford public schools.

In 1919 Patterson resigned as principal at Church School to help establish the Rockford Police Department’s Woman’s Bureau. Joining her in that task was Mrs. Anna C. Peterson. At the time many police departments around the country were beginning to use policewomen to work with women and children. Patterson served 10 years as a police matron.

She was also a founding member of Rockford Women’s Business and Professional Club and served as President of the State Federation. When Patterson died in 1929 Mayor Burt Allen and Police Chief August Bargren were among her pallbearers.

Do you feel safer, Rockford?

Rockford Police Officers are out there every day placing themselves at great risk to keep the community safe. It is disheartening when suspects facing multiple felonies are immediately released back onto the streets.

We support mayor Tom McNamara’s comments regarding the pretrial release of Varianna Parsons who is charged with First Degree Murder. This release, along with countless others locally and statewide, highlights the issues with Safe-T Act and Pretrial Fairness Act. Neither law makes our community safer.

Rockford Illinois Police Department officers work diligently to keep the community safe day in and day out. We do our part, the courts need to do the rest. Accountability comes on all levels.

That being said, any threats of violence against the judiciary are unacceptable. They should be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest exent. Perhaps we could look closely at the reckless laws passed over the last several years which have led us to a situation where murder suspects are returned to the streets of Rockford.

Chief Judge John Lowry says comments made by a public official put the safety of the judge and her family at risk.
