Our lives forever changed when we lost our son Tommy to su***de. He struggled with depression and addiction, but we never saw it coming. Our lives are forever changed. I have found a purpose in the pain by educating others to understand su***de, it's effects, and break the stigma around mental illness, addiction, and su***de.

We're encouraging a small but meaningful change in language: instead of saying “committed su***de,” say “died by su***de.”

This isn't about policing people's words or criticizing anyone for using a phrase they've heard their entire lives. It's about recognizing how language shapes our conversations and choosing words that lead with compassion instead of judgment.

Changing our language won't take away the pain of loss, but it can help reduce stigma and create space for more open, compassionate conversations about mental health.

Language matters. Compassion matters. Every life matters.

Help us welcome Emily Frer to the Tommy Corral Memorial Foundation team as our new part-time Mental Health Support Specialist!

Emily is passionate about mental health and helping children feel supported, understood, and cared for. She’s excited to make a difference in the lives of the children and families we serve and help connect them with the support and resources they need.

When she’s not working, Emily enjoys crafting, spending time with animals, and making memories with family and friends.

The team held a fundraiser for TCMF and presented us with a $450 check last night! We’re so grateful for their support and for taking the time to give back to a cause that means so much to our community.

Last month, TCMF was honored to attend Shatter Our Silence’s 10th Anniversary Celebration, a powerful evening centered around remembrance, hope, and the importance of breaking the silence around mental health and su***de prevention.

From the beautiful setting and meaningful tributes to the stories shared throughout the evening, the night was a reminder of why this work matters so much. We were especially moved by the memorial canvas covered in the names and messages of loved ones who are missed, remembered, and carried forward.

Congratulations to Shatter Our Silence on 10 years of bringing light into the darkness. We are grateful to stand alongside organizations and individuals who are committed to creating a community where people feel seen, supported, and never alone.

Together, we can continue to shatter the silence and be the hope in someone’s darkness.
