Common Ground Community Garden

Common Ground Community Garden A Community Garden Project Now more than ever Rockford families need help. We believe that we can be part of the solution.

Many families are struggling to provide healthy food for their families in the face of long-term unemployment and economic uncertainty. Not only do we want to raise fresh, healthy produce for our own families, but we want to help meet the same needs for other families. Common Ground desires for this project to be a "community" garden in three aspects: 1)We want to create a community of growers, 2)

we want this project to be open to community involvement, and 3) we want half of what we grow to be used to help feed our community. We hope you will join us in this effort! Common Ground is located on the campus of Northeast Christian Church in Rockford, IL.

Great last night...here's an update.

We have created 4 leadership teams, each serving a unique function in maintaining the success of this project. They are: Administration, Grounds, Growing, and Distribution (there is probably better names...but we'll go with these for now).

Administration keeps the project organized through receiving of applications, assignment of beds, and communication.

Grounds oversees the maintenance of the beds, grassy areas, and supporting systems, like water, electric, and equipment.

Growing oversees and supports the process of production, encourages and trains growers, and addresses any issues affecting production, like pests or disease.

Distribution handles the disbursement of produce by connecting with various local charities, arranging for delivery or pick-up.

We look forward to another successful season and if you'd like to be a part of one of these teams, please reply to this post and with your area of interest or expertise.

Many hands make light work!

Our thirteenth season is now behind us. Thank you to all of the growers that participated this year. Our donations total for the year were 5,054 pounds. That's a nice total when you consider the hailstorms and the extreme drought that worked against everyone.

A special thank you goes to Roger Gieseke for keeping the gardens mowed, and to Dan Porter for all of his work with his loader sprucing up everything and removing all of the compost.

Pat, Jennifer and I will not be leading Common Ground next season, however we still plan to garden. We will most likely be working with whomever assumes the responsibly to allow for a smooth transition. We appreciate the opportunity that we enjoyed over the last thirteen years.

Have a great Winter and we plan to see everyone next season.

Regards,
Mark

Thank you for gardening with us this season. Our donations total is 5,448 pounds. Special thanks again go out to Roger Gieseke for keeping the grounds mowed, trimming around the beds and emptying the compost and trash. And always, extended thanks go out to my wife Pat for making the pantry runs and many other contributions each and every year. Thank you to Jennifer for taking care of the correspondence and garden assignments. We couldn't have the gardens without each of their dedication.
Have wonderful holidays and a great Fall and Winter.....Mark Kolb

Just a reminder that all gardens must be cleaned out by Sunday October 23rd. We will make one final pantry run on Monday October 24th. Please make time this weekend with the warmer weather to get your area completed. If don't have your garden areas cleaned out on time, you risk the chance of losing them for next season. I will post the donated totals sometime after our final run. Thank you for growing with us this season..............Mark Kolb

Hello Growers,
Thank you to everyone who made donations this year. Our donations total for the year were 5,410 pounds. While this total is below our average totals in years past, it is still a lot of food. Special thanks go out to Roger Gieseke for keeping our grounds mowed, the trash and compost bin emptied as well as trimming around all of the beds. Also special thanks to Pat for making all of the deliveries and many other things around the gardens. Thanks to Jen for doing most of the correspondence and all of the bed and in-ground assignments.
Thank you again for everyone's commitment to this great ministry. Mark Kolb
