What a beautiful day for a concert in the park! If you didn’t attend, you missed an amazing concert. If you did attend, we can’t thank you enough.

We’d like to also thank Nettle Curbside Compost and Atwood Center - Rockford Park District for attending with us. We hope you stopped by their tables to sign up to compost and meet an owl.

And special thanks to Micky Torpedo! This is one of our favorite collaborations. We hope these albums inspire you to take conservation action by planting native plants for birds, composting to reduce your waste, reducing your carbon footprint, etc. Birds are great indicators of climate change. Their declining populations speak volumes. Let’s work together to protect them!

We’ve heard reports of a drone flying for the Ironman. We ask the community to please keep on eye for any downed juvenile peregrine falcons. They just learned to fly. Buildings, drones, humans, loud music, etc. will impact them in one way or another. We hope that doesn’t include any injuries. Currently, they flew north of the news tower and haven’t been relocated.

If you see a peregrine on the ground, please contact us immediately. Do not try and approach it. We have a volunteer that is a licensed wildlife rehabber and will be there ASAP to assess it, etc.

Thank you!!

Second Fledge!

Both River and Charlotte are flying.

It rarely happens that we capture the first flight on camera, but River took their first flight for all of us to observe today!

The flight path included flying by the library, Luther Center, back to the news tower, and finally landing on the former bank building directly across the river.

River has since made it back to the news tower.

Fledge Watch 2026 - Update

We’re always thankful for our volunteers who are able to observe these young birds and ensure they have a safe first flight. And today, around 4pm, Teresa observed the first fledge of 2026!

She noted that it flew everywhere. To the library, to the Luther Center, and back to news tower. It did not have enough lift to get back up to the ledge, so it grabbed a window screen and ended hanging upside down. It hung there for a while before letting go and flew back across the river where it landed on the former bank building. It is there now resting.

The adults will drop food there for it and continue to encourage flight. It might make it back to the news tower before nightfall.

We’re hoping to get an ID on who the first fledge was soon!

Fledge Watch 2026 - Update

Today is Day 6 of Fledge Watch 2026. Both River and Charlotte were 40 days old on June 9th. Typically, young peregrines take their first flights around 40 days, but sometimes it can take longer. The morning was absolutely beautiful and one of the best we’ve had in terms of weather. Moderate temps and a gentle breeze out of the southeast.

Momma was either perched on the cupola (top arrow) or the corner of the Luther Center. River and Charlotte mostly lounged on the NW corner (bottom arrow). The adults brought them food and they took a little snooze. Overall, a quiet morning (5:30am-9am).

If you join our Rockford Peregrine Falcon Watch, you can read more updates from our volunteers.

We’re 4 days in to our Fledge Watch 2026 and thankfully we haven’t had any issues. No flyers yet. But, also, no swimmers.

And we know exactly how it feels to have one end up in the river!

We appreciate everyone that helps us watch over the Rockford peregrines each year.
