Sharing this from my best friend (not married to), fellow Minister, and a Godly man!
A couple of years ago now, our ministry, Lufkin Street Ministries 2540 (LSM2540), began a strategic partnership with Mission Alive and we became an IFC (Innovative Faith Community). Our homeless ministry has made some great strides ever since. For 26 years, I worked in churches. I worked in the Church of Christ as a Youth & Family Minister for 16 years and then as a Preaching Minister for 10 years. About 6 years into those 10 years of Preaching Ministry, I began working in Homeless Ministry. I’m now in my 8th year of Homeless Ministry and in my 30th year overall in ministry. I also currently serve as a Hospice Chaplain and I am in year 3 of that role. We’re working towards raising the monthly support to do LSM2540 full time and then I could step away from being a Chaplain.
The Homeless Ministry journey began when my best friend and fellow Compadre, Jason Hale, launched what we eventually served in together; Street Ministries 2540 in Rockdale, Texas. That was in 2018. Then in 2019, my family and I moved from Rockdale to Lufkin Texas and I launched Lufkin Street Ministries 2540. Our two ministries work both together and separately. Jason Hale does an amazing work in Rockdale, you should definitely follow it. The Jason’s, as many refer to us as, are connected with another good friend serving in this type of ministry. This friend is another fellow Compadre; Clay Mason. Clay founded and leads the Mission of the Way in Trinidad, Colorado and if you aren’t following the work there, you’re missing out. And as my good friend Clay would say, I said all that to say this, God is good! I never imagined I’d be doing what I’m doing now and I’m sure that Jason and Clay would share the same sentiment. The ministry here grows more and more every month. We started with 7-10 on average coming to our 2540
Fellowship in the Park and just last weekend we had around 40 and over 50 with the volunteers.
But on top of all that, one of the things I’ve enjoyed getting to do lately, in addition to walking alongside our marginalized neighbors, is getting to hear my local pastor friends preach. In the last two weeks I’ve sat and worshipped with my friends at a local Methodist church and an Episcopal church. Wednesday I’ll be speaking at a local Baptist church and my friends from a local Catholic church help lead some of our street outreaches. And I’ve been blessed by every bit of it.
Please keep all three ministries in your prayers. Please pray for each of us as we raise the financial support needed for each of the ministries. Please pray for those we walk alongside. Also, please pray for our spouses. Sarah (my wife), Courtney (Jason’s wife), and Mary (Clay’s wife) are three amazing women. The three of them are patient, supportive, and more. I also want to think another good friend and fellow Compadre, Joel Scott. Joel is a great friend and supporter to all three of us.
Lastly, I want to think each of you. Each of you, in different ways, has challenged me through your thoughts expressed in your posts. I’m still growing. I’m still learning. And this group has been a big part of that journey.
