RV Kiwanis was warmly welcomed today for a visit to Rocket Manufacturing, a hands-on program that has been shaping student skills since 2014. The visit offered a close look at how real-world manufacturing experiences are preparing students for life beyond high school.
Students interested in working in Rocket Manufacturing must apply and complete a formal interview process. They create a portfolio and are interviewed by outside community members to ensure the process is fair and equitable. While interviews can feel uncomfortable and nerve-wracking, they provide valuable practice—helping students learn how to ask strong questions, build confidence, and make connections that may lead to future opportunities after graduation.
Rocket Manufacturing is made up of 13 shop students along with several office team members who manage social media, marketing, and bookkeeping. Together, they tackle a wide range of projects, including blueprints for a Hope Haven wheelchair, a staircase built to assist an elderly individual, stand-up tables, gates and panels for the agriculture industry, and custom items such as clocks, coasters, and coat racks. Community members can also bring in new ideas, which the team works to bring to life.
Much of the learning happens through trial and error. If a project doesn’t meet expectations, students revisit the design, ask for feedback, and start again, refining their work until it matches the client’s vision.
The program is led by Mr. Van Veldhuizen and Mr. Weber, who guide students through both the technical and professional skills needed for success.
