Angela was born on November 7th 1991. On the morning of February 2nd, 2024 Zachary McQuillan, her abuser selfishly shot Angela point blank in the heart. On May 1, 2018, my son’s life was taken from us by someone that we trusted and loved who turned out to be a monster. Brandon was such a sweet, loving boy. He touched people’s hearts that he never met. His little smile could brighten anyone’s day. Jesse Hartley was convicted of 1st degree murder and aggravated child abuse for Brandon’s death on June 4, 2019.

In the early morning hours of December 16th, 2019, Hunter Sewell maliciously took his wife Whitney’s life along with their unborn child’s. He instilled fear in her by chasing her throughout their home and shooting four random shots at her. After terrorizing her, he cornered her in their kitchen and shot her twice, point-blank in the head. Being the coward he was, he later took his own life using the same gun he killed Whitney with.

On June 24, 2010, Cara was shot in the face and killed by her husband Terrence Hayes, she was 42 years old. Cara was an avid horsewoman and was very active in the Parelli method of horsemanship. She loved animals of all kinds. She left two horses and five dogs behind. She had a great work ethic and was extremely accomplished in everything she undertook.

What does domestic violence look like? Here are some resources that can help you better understand what a victim is going through and how to be a supportive friend. The most important thing is to trust them. We may want them to leave or end things but it has to be their decision. Sometimes it can take a victim 5-7 attempts before they end their relationship.

Dawnita was brutally murdered from stab wounds inflicted on her by her husband, Timothy Brandon, she was 32. Dawnita was very vibrant, beautiful woman, she loved the outdoors, fishing, camping and spending time with family and friends. Leysa was born November 27, 1977. On Saturday, May 29, 1999, Leysa was shot twice in the face by her ex- boyfriend, Lawrence “Duke” Howard at the home of her mother Chris Bernal, who was present along with her sister Crista and Leysa’s son, Michael. Six weeks earlier, their 10-month-old son’s leg was broken as Duke was physically attacking Leysa. Leysa did everything right with an Order of Protection for her son and herself.

We encourage everyone to work to end domestic abuse in our community. Thank you Young At Heart Senior Center, The Women's Club, YWCA staff, Board, and all our volunteers who helped last night. Join YWCA tomorrow at our annual DV Awareness Vigil & Glow Run. We will honor the lives of those lost to domestic violence through a ceremony and a memorial walk. The event begins and end at Young at Heart Senior Center. We meet at 6pm, the ceremony starts at 6:15 and the walk begins after that. It is a 1.6 Glow Walk. There will be food and resources available as well. Show up as a group, wear purple in honor of DV Awareness month. Honor a friend of family member you have lost. This is a family-friendly event.
