At the regular meeting of the Rock Springs Rotary Club on Jan 14, 2026, our guest speaker was Steve Shea whose subject was "Subsidence and Coal mining in Rock Springs, Wyoming".
His presentation was most interesting to all as it was about underground coal mining in and around and under Rock Springs Wyoming.
He began with a great explanation of the Rock Springs coal formation with its numerous minable coal seams and there are many coal outcroppings on the anticline which creates westward dipping coal seam near Rock Springs. He stated that the coal outcrops covered over 110 miles around the flanks of the anticline uplift.
Of great interest were his pictures of the old mine tipples and loadout facilities for transporting the mined coal out to be used to run the large steam engine locomotives on the Union Pacific Railroad.
