The George Fire and EMS hosted the burn trailer from CFT - Customized Firefighter Training Inc. tonight, and extended the invite to us!
It was an awesome night training with their crew and experiencing live fire!

Last night, the Rock Rapids Fire Coalition—the non-profit arm of the Rock Rapids Fire Department—was awarded a mini grant from the Lyon County Riverboat Foundation!

These funds will be used to purchase two smoke machines for training purposes. In the past, it’s been difficult to realistically simulate fire conditions without actually burning and damaging a structure. This equipment will allow us to create safer, more effective training scenarios for our firefighters.

🚁 EMERGENCY LANDING ZONE TRAINING 🚁

June 25, 2026

The Rock Rapids Fire Department is hosting a Landing Zone Training with the Avera CareFlight Helicopter Team — and we’re inviting all area agencies to join us!

📍 Location: Avera Merrill Pioneer Hospital – Rock Rapids, Iowa
🕕 Free Meal: Served at the Rock Rapids Fire Station starting at 6:00 PM for all participating first responders before the training
🕖 Training Begins: 7:00 PM at the Avera Merrill Pioneer Hospital Helipad

This training will cover key skills for safely establishing and operating a helicopter landing zone, along with coordination and communication with flight crews.

👨‍🚒 Who Should Attend:
All first responders in Lyon County and surrounding areas are strongly encouraged to attend — fire, EMS, and law enforcement.

Come get a great meal, sharpen your skills, and build stronger interagency coordination!

Tonight's drill was a maze manipulated by the extrication tools. Using the spreader, air bags, halligans, and anything else the guys could find on the trucks, they had to move a ball from start to finish. Lift an inch, crib an inch.
Team Hooligan came away with the win!

This picture is from North of Rock Rapids. A cigarette thrown from a passing vehicle nearly became a really bad situation. Luckily, a neighbor spotted it and got it put out.
Lyon County is under a red flag warning until 7pm tonight.
Wind gusts up to 35 MPH and humidity as low as 17%, these conditions are favorable for a fire to get out of control in a hurry.

Tonight we honored Mike VanDenTop with his retirement from the department.
Mike has been a first responder in Lyon County for over 40 years, between the sheriff's department, George Fire Department, and 26 years here in Rock Rapids.
