We are all about sustainability and normalizing second hand gifts here at ReWork YoCo, but sometimes you need a specific product - and for York County art needs we now have in Rock Hill at 361 Oakland Ave. Heather was able to visit to get her kids some gift sketchbooks and small stocking stuffer multipurpose crayons (as well as the clean up supplies for “After the Art”). Plus, if you are a fine arts type, they have a great selection of high end supplies.

Drop by and check them out for your holiday art shopping needs - supporting small businesses who can help you find exactly what you need is a wonderful form of conscientious consumption. And businesses like these grow and support our local art community in amazing ways!

Just an update on why things have been a little quiet:

A non-profit takes a lot of work to get off the ground, and our board felt it would be wise to take an official “hiatus” on some of the legal and logical steps for the time being.

We will still be around and look forward to the day we can dive back into this project, full steam ahead. For now, the social media feeds will still be active and we are so appreciative of all the support. Sometimes taking a calculated pause is the right call to ensure long term success down the line.

We are back from a brief social media hiatus!

Things have been progressing in the background here at ReWork YoCo and tonight Heather had the pleasure of speaking at the Junior Woman's Club of Rock Hill board meeting and introducing them to Creative Reuse. She was able to share our mission, how we fit into the sustainability network for York County, and our work towards establishing a Creative Reuse Center. She was also able to bring a sample donation list and show how ReWork YoCo utilizes donations like small samples of old stationary to print our own materials.

The presentation also opened up good conversations about our local recycling options through and how local nonprofit groups can collaborate and expand the network of sustainability for our county. Heather was also able to share postcards about the new recycling app that helps to identify what we can or can’t recycle through our local centers and pick up.

If you would like to set up a presentation or speaking engagement to learn more about Creative Reuse and/or to support ReWork YoCo as we work towards bringing a Creative Reuse Center to York County, SC reach out to us at [email protected].

And a big thank you to the Junior Woman’s Club of Rock Hill for inviting us to speak tonight!

Is this stack of storage drawers really tall, or is our founder very short?

A little of both!

We are busy this weekend prepping for an amazing delivery - we have connected with a local Tech/STEAM educator who is setting up an “Invention Lab” that is aimed to encourage students to repurpose items in new ways. Thanks to our earliest donors, ReWork is able to provide this teacher with a large amount of her wish list and support to set up the lab space!*

Keep an eye out for updates on this project and future asks to help support the new Invention Lab through targeted supply donations.

Are you a York County educator who has a similar vision or need? Reach out to us at [email protected] and we would love to see how we can support your work and connect you with our growing network of donors!

We promise we will be back with content and updates soon!

Unfortunately the start of school has brought with it a local end of summer Covid surge and Heather and her family are all down for the count (but recovering).

Once we are fully on the upswing, we will be back to posting and updating. We appreciate your patience and everyone be safe, wash your hands, stay home if you are sick, and be considerate of those who may need to mask or be more cautious during this time for their (or a loved one’s) own health. Community first!

Today is the day before our local schools are back in session and we are hunkered down waiting for Debby to make drop offs tomorrow exceptionally wet. As such, it’s a perfect day to work on processing cardboard for the cat scratcher project we promised to share and a crafting kit/class we will be featuring soon! That means lots of template tracing and cutting, while the kittens take their afternoon nap.

Cardboard is amazing for beginners kits and crafting because once you are done with it, so long as it is still unpainted or unglued it can still be recycled! And shipping boxes are study enough to stand in for buying plastic or heavy duty tools in many cases until you know you enjoy a new craft to make that investment.

What is your favorite way to utilize cardboard in your arts and crafts?

“What is ReWork Reading?”

This week we found “Creative Book Art” by Clare Youngs (ISBN : 978-1-80066-118-0)

This book features 50 different projects made from
old books.

The book has five chapters with different project themes:

1. Cards, Stationary, and Gifts
2. Decorating the Home
3. Decorating Children’s Rooms
4. Animals
5. Folded Books

Techniques for the projects include a sewn binding, folding, block printing, sculptural gluing and other techniques.

One of our favorite projects was for making paper roses, which would be beautiful as favors or a bouquet at a wedding.

How about a (since we missed )

Back in April The universe aligned for our founder to catch the festival in Greenville as a road trip lunch break home. This also meant she had the immense pleasure of meeting Grant and Silvia from at their Make and Take loose parts booth!

The kids had a blast creating and Heather got the chance to network and talk a little shop. Their setup was a great inspiration for our own planning and programming goals in York County.
