Rock Hill Community Fridge

05/11/2026

Notice: on Saturday our community fridge stopped working. With it being so close to the move date this week, we have had the fridge hauled off today so that we don’t end up with hot/spoiled food continuing to be left in fridge. We will update once a new fridge is in place.

In the meantime, please continue to donate to other locations with a fridge and pantries around town. The location at The Mercantile is officially closed down.

Many have asked what’s involved in hosting a community fridge. The most important things are accessibility, good lighting, electricity and volunteers or staff to help keep up with the trash that is left from donors. Typically boxes and bags get left behind, so you’ll want to make sure you have trash near by. Security cameras is an extra added bonus, although we haven’t had any major issues where we’ve had to check cameras in over a year.

To clarify, as many have also asked why the Mercantile is having to do away with its location. The main reason is the landlord has asked it be moved. the apartments want to start using the caboose area for events. The timing also lines up with the owner of The Mercantile moving out of the country and the responsibility being solely on the staff is too much to ask. The Mercantile has hosted for 5 years and there are plenty of other businesses that can offer a fridge. The main word of advise is to make sure that your business won’t suffer from having the houseless community drop by and grab food. We recommend the site be a public building with more than one staff member.

The Community Fridge is looking for a new host site in downtown Rock Hill. The Mercantile has hosted our fridge for 5 years and we are looking for another business to help take on the responsibility of feeding our community. Beginning May 15th, the service at The Mercantile will discontinue. If interested, reach out! We will be happy to walk you through the ins and out of what’s required to host the fridge.
