ESRREC President Cora Dickson and ESRREC Treasurer William Fielder, along with Rocky and Stoney (an adoptable bonded pair of brothers!) were grateful to receive this donation from Kent Island Running Group this morning! Thank you to everyone who participated in the Fast and Furriest in April.

Kent Island Running Group presented our donation of $7,500 to the Eastern Shore Rabbit Rescue and Education Center today 🐇 and volunteers at ESRREC said the donation couldn't have come at a better time! Thank you again to everyone who worked, volunteered, and participated in the Fast & Furriest Run for Rescues that made this donation possible!

Please keep our races in mind in the future and follow us on FB or instagram or check out our website! All our races give back to the local community either through scholarships given to local graduating seniors and through donations to local organizations that support our community!

WHY DO WE CAPTURE STRAY RABBITS?

Meet Sudsy. She was a stray rabbit in Sudlersville for around two years, according to local residents. They did not intervene to catch her.

You wouldn't know it from this photo of Sudsy, but she suffered blunt force trauma to her head, likely from colliding with a vehicle, because she was found on the side of the road on Wednesday by a good Samaritan. Sudsy was hemorrhaging and woozy. They took her home, not expecting her to survive. But she did. She was alert the next day. The person who found her called us.

Thanks to our network of dedicated volunteers she was seen by a vet today. The exam revealed: blood in left ear, a laceration on her left eyelid, tongue sticking out, and her left eye had possible detached retina. X-ray revealed: fractured jaw, orbital bone fracture (eye socket).

She is not out of the woods yet. It is a miracle she made it this far. We are most concerned about making sure she is eating, given her fractured jaw.

When you see a stray pet rabbit in your neighborhood, please know that they are in danger. They are happily munching clover and appear to love their freedom. But they are risking their lives every day from predators, disease, parasites, extreme weather, and man-made threats like traffic.

We are praying that Sudsy can recover and be placed with a family that won't abandon her again.

Introducing Mandinka! Yes, inspired by the Sinead O’Connor 80s song which was in turn inspired by the West Africa tribe. She is just 4 months old and came from an unwanted litter surrendered at a shelter. We transferred her all the way from Baltimore County today because she has a serious medical issue, and they were having “quality of life” doubts. Not only the infected eye was concerning, but also an abscess on her left cheek.

Mandinka has settled in at her foster home, and is eating and drinking fine. She was seen by our exotics vet and we will keep monitoring her, but she will likely have surgery to remove the abscess.

Donations for Mandinka’s medical expenses can be sent via PayPal ([email protected]) or by texting BUNNY to 44-321 for a credit card payment.
